The University of Louisville MBA: What You Need To Know

A young MBA program, the University of Louisville’s College of Business full-time MBA launched in 2010 and graduated their first cohort in 2011. The Louisville College of Business is located in Louisville, Kentucky – the 26th-largest city in the United States, with a population over 1 million, although the MBA community feels much more intimate with an average class size of 70 and cohort size of 35. Global companies such as Brown Forman, UPS, Humana, Papa Johns, and KFC Yum, have a presence in the area, as well as major employers Ford Motor Company and FedEx.

The 45-credit-hour Louisville MBA is a 13-month accelerated program and is perfect for recent graduates who have limited or no professional experience and working professionals who hope to quickly obtain an MBA or pivot into new careers. One of the staples of the program is a highly competitive 11-month paid internship opportunity.

“The MBA is based on an internship model to give students with limited professional experience the chance to complete the academic program in thirteen months with an eleven-month paid internship woven in so that they leave with both a world-class degree and rich experience applying the knowledge in a real-world setting. Because the internships are paid, their educational experience can be very affordable and because most of the professional (internship) experiences lead to job offers, our Full-Time MBA provides a true value to the student, creating a unique and often life changing experience that is hard to find elsewhere,” says College of Business Dean Todd Mooradian.

The Louisville MBA teaches advanced business in the context of collaboration, critical thinking, and problem solving and utilizes a cohort and team-based approach to learning. Students attend classes three nights per week from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., and an additional six Saturdays for soft skills seminars.

While students take the core courses, electives provide a degree of specializations if students choose to pursue them. Depending upon the program, the college currently offers up to five different certificates including managerial analytics, distilled spirits, franchise management, horse racing industry business, and family business management and advising.

“Uniquely, the UofL MBA program does not charge a fee per credit hour like many other programs. This allows our students to take more electives than they are required to in order to graduate. Last year, over 70% of the students graduated with more than the minimum of 45 credit hours required for graduation. Having no program fee removes cost as an impediment for student learning making UofL MBA students more competitive in the job market,” says Program Director, Dr. Sandeep Goyal.

Another highlight of the program is a 10-day international study trip and professional development modules extend their learning beyond business savvy by expanding students’ global perspectives, soft skills, and professional expertise while they immerse in different cultures and learn how business is conducted in other parts of the world.
