Before returning to academic life, Hoogduin was a Board Member at the De Nederlandse Bank, Global Chief Economist for Robeco, and Managing Director of IRIS (Institute for Research and Investment Services). After earning his Ph.D. in economic studies at the University of Groningen, Hoogduin spent nine years as the school’s Professor of Money and Banking. Graded: Students will receive a certificate of participation for completing the course. Description: A multidisciplinary course developed in partnership with other Groningen faculty, this course provides tools so leaders can make choices despite lacking information or having to weigh an array of options and variables. Each week, guest lecturers will apply concepts related to areas like biology and psychology to economic and financial decision-making. These concepts include: “graph theory and networks, emergent behaviour, agent-based modeling, evolutionary dynamics, cellular automata and self-organisation, complexity in history, decision making under uncertainty, heuristics and biases and subsequently leadership and entrepreneurship.” In the final two weeks, students will apply these concepts to case studies involving the 2007-2008 financial collapse and the growth of cities.
