David Hummels was appointed interim dean of Purdue’s Krannert School of Management in September and charged with searching for a new dean. But everyone liked him so much that nine months later he’s been hired as permanent dean. The search committee chose Hummels based on an abundance of positive feedback from faculty, students, staff, and alumni during Hummels’ time as interim dean, provost Deba Dutta told the Purdue news service.

“Krannert is a talented and incredibly hardworking community of students, staff and scholars.” Hummels says.”We have a proud legacy of educating the leaders of some of the most successful companies in the world and producing foundational scholarship on business and economics. We are committed to making even greater impact in the future.”

The dean of Krannert serves as CEO and provides leadership in academic, intellectual, and administrative settings. Hummels is now responsible for overseeing Krannert’s educational and research processes, representing the school to internal and external members, and ensuring the school’s finances are in order.

Hummels joined Krannert in 2000 after serving on the faculty at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He attained his master’s degree and PHD, both in economics, from the University of Michigan in 1992 and 1995, after earning a B.A in economics and political science from the University of Colorado.

An accomplished author and researcher, Hummels has published four books and more than 40 research articles in several major economics publications. He also serves as the associate editor of the Journal of International Economics as well as associate director of the Forum for Research on Empirical International Trade.

Hummels’ research portfolio is broad within the field of international economics, including infrastructure and facilitation on trade and economic development, offshoring, product differentiation, barriers to trade, and the broader impacts of aviation.
