Suspect In Slaying Of Federal Judge’s Son Was An M7 MBA

Federal judge Esther Salas’ home was attacked Sunday night by a man wearing a FedEx delivery uniform. Her 20-year-old son was killed and her husband (pictured) was wounded. NJ.com

This story has been updated with new developments Monday.

The suspect in the shooting death of the son of a federal judge in New Jersey was an attorney and Class of 1997 Columbia Business School MBA who himself was found dead Monday (July 20), a day after the attack occurred.

Authorities say Roy Den Hollander, a New York City attorney who described himself on LinkedIn as a “civil rights litigator,” was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound the day after an attack on the North Brunswick, New Jersey home of U.S. District Court Judge Esther Salas by a man dressed in a FedEx delivery uniform. Salas’ 20-year-old son, Daniel Anderl, a student at Catholic University, was killed, and the judge’s husband, criminal defense lawyer Mark Anderl, 63, was wounded. The elder Anderl underwent surgery Sunday and was listed in stable condition Monday. Salas was in the basement of the home when the attack occurred and was not injured.

Hollander was found dead in a car in Rockland in Sullivan County, N.Y., about two hours from Salas’ home. “There’s a pretty good level of confidence he’s the guy,” an official with knowledge of the case told The New York Times.

JUDGE’S 20-YEAR-OLD SON ANSWERED DOOR & WAS SHOT THROUGH THE HEART

According to an ABC News report, a gunman knocked on the door of the Salas-Anderl home at about 5 p.m. Sunday. “Daniel Anderl answered the door and was shot first, before his father was also shot.” The younger Anderl was shot through the heart, North Brunswick Mayor Francis Womack told reporters.

“Salas had received threats in the past, sources said. Authorities are investigating whether there is any connection between those prior threats and the shooting, or whether it possibly involved the husband’s work as a criminal defense attorney.

“‘As a judge, she had threats from time to time, but everyone is saying that recently there had not been any,’ said Mayor Womack, who is personal friends with the judge and her husband.”

A senior law enforcement official told NBC News in New York that authorities were looking into whether a package or envelope addressed to Salas was found near the suspect’s body. The suspect was reportedly dressed as a FedEx employee, but it was not known whether he had an official connection to the company. None is listed on his LinkedIn page.

“We are aware of the media reports and are fully cooperating with investigating authorities,” FedEx said in a statement to media.

‘ANTI-FEMINIST’ LAWYER GOT HIS LAW DEGREE FROM GEORGE WASHINGTON SCHOOL

Hollander got his law degree from George Washington University Law School in 1985. His LinkedIn profile includes this interesting item: From July 1999 to March 2000 he worked as a manager who “Improved and managed Kroll’s delivery of intelligence and security in the former Soviet Union.” Kroll is an international consulting firm headquartered in New York. Among Hollander’s duties, he “Reorganized operations that increased service quality and reduced turnaround time for conducting investigations, processing information, and preparing intelligence reports.”

Hollander had a case before Salas in 2015, challenging the military’s male-only draft. It’s unclear whether that case sparked the attack on her home, but according to NBC, “In the recently published memoir Hollander left online, he called Salas ‘a lazy and incompetent Latina judge appointed by Obama.’ Referring to the 2015 case Salas presided over, Hollander said he ‘wanted to ask the Judge out, but thought she might hold me in contempt.'”

In 2008, Hollander went on Fox to talk to host Neil Cavuto about his lawsuit against Columbia University for offering a women’s studies program without also offering a “men’s studies program.” That same year the attorney’s “war on feminism” was written about by columnist Meghan Daum in the Los Angeles Times. His anti-female writings are all over the Internet. More recently, he managed a website, Been-Scammed.com, that includes such topics as “Feminazis” and urges men to “wake up,” claiming that “In the media, government, courts, education, and business, the Feminists violate your rights with impunity while taking what they don’t deserve and can’t handle.” His online resume lists his primary experience as “Anti-Feminist litigation, investigations, and advice on general corporate matters.” It also says he earned his Columbia MBA “with honors.”

Judge Salas is based in Newark, N.J. About the attack on her home and the murder of her son, U.S. Attorney General William Barr said Monday: “This kind of lawless, evil action carried out against a member of the federal judiciary will not be tolerated, and I have ordered the full resources of the FBI and U.S. Marshals Service to investigate the matter.” Added New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez: “I know Judge Salas and her husband well, and was proud to recommend her to President Obama for nomination to New Jersey’s federal bench. My prayers are with Judge Salas and her family, and that those responsible for this horrendous act are swiftly apprehended and brought to justice.”
