John Mullins of London Business School is the 2026 Outstanding Case Teacher

The Case Centre has named John Mullins of London Business School as its Outstanding Case Teacher for 2026, honoring the entrepreneurship professor for what the organization described as a sustained contribution to case-based learning.

The award was announced Wednesday as part of World Case Teaching Day and recognizes business school faculty who demonstrate innovation and excellence in the classroom. Now in its 13th year, the global competition evaluates nominees on their teaching approach, student feedback, and peer support.

GLOBAL AWARD RECOGNIZES CASE METHOD EXCELLENCE

Judges pointed to Mullins’ emphasis on applying theory to real-world decisions. Known for writing many of his own cases, he frequently structures them in stages so students must reassess their thinking as new information emerges, reflecting the ambiguity leaders face in practice. His classes typically center on discussion and debate, with students expected to arrive fully prepared to defend their recommendations.

“I am deeply honored to receive this very meaningful award,” Mullins says in the Case Centre’s news release, noting that his teaching philosophy was shaped by former Stanford Graduate School of Business professor James Van Horne, whose example influenced his decision to prioritize teaching when he moved into academia.

Vicky Lester, CEO of The Case Centre and chair of the judging panel, says Mullins is “an inspirational case teacher,” citing his facilitation skills and the lasting impact of his courses on learners across MBA and executive education audiences.

TWO DECADES OF BUSINESS EXPERIENCE INFORM THE CLASSROOM

Before joining London Business School, Mullins spent about 20 years in executive roles in high-growth retail businesses, experience that he says continues to inform his teaching and research. Over his academic career, he has published numerous articles, written more than 50 case studies, and authored several books on entrepreneurship.

The Outstanding Case Teacher competition is judged by an international panel of faculty and academic leaders, including representatives from INSEAD and China Europe International Business School. Entrants are required to submit detailed materials outlining their pedagogy along with evidence of classroom impact.

Mullins will share more about his approach during a webinar scheduled for May 21, offering fellow educators a closer look at the methods that earned him this year’s honor.
