Emory University has named Sabyasachi “Saby” Mitra the next John H. Harland Dean of Goizueta Business School, the university announced today (June 11). Mitra, who has led the University of Florida’s Warrington College of Business since 2020, begins his new role August 1.

The appointment closes a search that Provost Badia Ahad launched in February, led by a 16-member advisory committee co-chaired by Josh Newton, senior vice president for advancement and alumni engagement, and Anandhi Bharadwaj, Goizueta Endowed Chair in Electronic Commerce and professor of information systems and operations management.

Mitra succeeds Gareth James, who will become the new dean of the Anderson School of Management at UCLA this summer. Under James’s leadership, Goizueta launched three new degree programs and two centers, hired 22 additional full-time faculty, and grew enrollment by 35%. Emory’s full-time MBA program climbed one spot in Poets&Quants‘ 2025 ranking; however, it fell six places to 23rd in the 2026 U.S. News & World Report list.

‘WISDOM, JUDGMENT & STRATEGIC PERSPECTIVE’

A scholar of information systems and technology management, Mitra brings both deep academic credentials and a track record of institutional growth to Atlanta. At Florida Warrington, he succeeded John Kraft, who had held the deanship for 30 years, and has since repositioned the school as a national leader in AI and analytics education, expanded online graduate programs, and opened new locations in Miami and Jacksonville. But Atlanta will be something of a homecoming for Mitra, who spent the 27 years prior to joining Warrington at Georgia Tech’s Scheller College of Business, where he served as senior associate dean of programs and senior associate dean of faculty and research.

“Ever since my many years at Georgia Tech Scheller College of Business, just down the road from Emory, I have always held Emory University and Goizueta Business School in high regard,” Mitra tells Emory Business magazine.

Mitra earned a Ph.D. from the Tippie College of Business at the University of Iowa and a bachelor of technology degree in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur, India.

“Goizueta has a stellar reputation, a long history of research and program excellence, and is located in the most dynamic city and region in the country,” he says. “I believe it can be one of the best business schools in the world, and I am excited to be part of its future.”

“Dr. Mitra brings the wisdom, judgment and strategic perspective that come from successfully leading complex academic organizations,” she says. “His record of achievement reflects not only exceptional administrative skill, but also a deep understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing higher education today.”
