Through our customized Me Inc. curriculum and specialized Academies, we equip students with lifelong career navigation skills” Tim Byrne has held a variety of leadership roles at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business since joining the school in 2016. Over the years, he has worked across admissions, financial aid, business intelligence, and enrollment management, most recently serving as Executive Director of Graduate Admissions. Prior to his current role, Byrne led Kelley’s business intelligence function and oversaw graduate admissions and financial aid operations. Before returning to Kelley, he held positions at The Ohio State University, Indiana University, Michigan State University, and Syracuse University, building expertise in admissions, student affairs, data analytics, and higher education administration. His work focuses on using data-driven strategies to enhance student recruitment, enrollment, and overall student success. P&Q: What is the biggest misconception prospective students have about your school or about business education more broadly? Byrne: The biggest misconception about Kelley—and Midwestern business programs in general—is that being in a college town like Bloomington limits your global reach or national recruiting opportunities. In reality, it does the exact opposite. Because our students immerse themselves in a dedicated residential community rather than scattering across a major metropolitan city after class, they build exceptionally deep, lifelong bonds. That translates directly into our alumni network: Kelley grads are famously responsive and advocate aggressively for current students. Furthermore, major global recruiters—from top consulting firms and tech giants to CPG leaders—actively travel to Bloomington specifically because our students demonstrate high emotional intelligence, humble leadership, and exceptional preparation. P&Q: What changes do you see in students applying to business school compared to five or 10 years ago, and how is it changing the way you recruit and evaluate? Byrne: Today’s applicants are far more intentional about alignment with personal values and purpose. Five to ten years ago, candidates often viewed the MBA purely as a passport to a prestige brand. Today’s applicants want to know how a program will help them navigate rapid technological shifts, ethical leadership challenges, and non-linear career paths. In admissions, this shift has transformed how we evaluate candidates. While quantitative readiness and academic aptitude remain essential baseline requirements, we place a much higher premium on adaptability, self-awareness, and emotional intelligence. We look for authentic storytellers who understand their ‘why’ and are eager to contribute to a team-first culture. In recruiting, we’ve shifted toward more personalized, high-touch engagement—meeting candidates where they are through direct access to current students, alumni, and career coaches early in the pipeline. P&Q: With the ROI of an MBA under more scrutiny than ever, how do you make the case to a hesitant applicant? Byrne: When evaluating ROI, applicants must look at both sides of the equation: total investment and long-term yield. Kelley offers one of the most compelling ROI equations in global business education. First, the living costs in Bloomington allow students to minimize debt during their two years compared to urban schools. Second, our career outcomes rival top-tier programs anywhere—our graduates secure competitive starting salaries and bonuses at the world’s top organizations. But real ROI isn’t just about your first job post-MBA; it’s about career resilience over 20 or 30 years. Through our customized Me Inc. curriculum and specialized Academies, we equip students with lifelong career navigation skills. When you factor in our lifetime career services support and a 130,000+ strong business alumni network, the two-year investment pays dividends across an entire career. P&Q: How is AI changing what you look for in an applicant, or how you’re preparing students for the job market? Byrne: AI hasn’t changed what we look for in applicants as much as it has elevated the value of uniquely human capabilities—critical thinking, ethical judgment, strategic empathy, and collaborative problem-solving. We want candidates who view technology as an accelerator rather than a crutch. In terms of student preparation, AI is integrated directly into our core curriculum and specialized electives. We aren’t just teaching students how to use AI tools for productivity; we are teaching them how to lead organizations through AI-driven transformation, evaluate data critically, and make strategic decisions when algorithms fall short. Our goal is to graduate business leaders who can manage AI teams, navigate tech ethics, and drive innovation from Day 1. P&Q: What’s one thing about your program that doesn’t show up in the rankings or brochure but you wish more applicants knew? Byrne: The program is thoughtfully designed from the beginning and students start with the transformative nature of Me Inc.—our intensive, highly personalized leadership and career development program that begins before traditional classes even start. Me Inc. forces students to pause, reflect on their core values, understand their personal brand, and map out their career trajectory with dedicated executive coaches. It strips away the noise and imposter syndrome that often comes with starting business school. By the time recruiters arrive on campus, Kelley students aren’t just presenting a polished resume—they have a clear, confident narrative about who they are, what they bring to the table, and how they lead. It’s the secret sauce behind our consistently outstanding internship and full-time placement stats. DON’T MISS 5 QUESTIONS WITH: BOSTON QUESTROM’S LEADERSHIP TEAM © Copyright 2026 Poets & Quants.
