Background: I had been working in pharma R&D for the past 5 years. Potential layoffs at my company prompted a long held desire but last minute attempt to apply to business school. For a number of reasons, I was solely interested in Wharton. After a few weeks of furiously studying for the GMAT, I got a 705. I contacted Kelsey less than 1 week before the R3 deadline. Kelsey was straightforward with me, she told me R3 was a crapshoot, but I definitely had a shot, and she could help me put my best foot forward. Over the next 5 days, we put my application together from scratch. Kelsey’s guidance was critical as we translated my experiences from the totally different world of R&D into MBA-speak. I know for a fact that my application would have looked nothing like it did without Kelsey’s help. Needless to say, I got in!

I found Kelsey around the middle of August last year through a friend who recommended her. At the time, I had only been seriously considering applying to business school for about a week. I knew I was determined to apply in Round 2, but I had absolutely no idea how to navigate the process. Looking back, I can confidently say that without Kelsey’s help, there is no chance I would have successfully applied to seven schools within the timeline I was targeting.

When I first spoke with Kelsey, I had just signed up for a Manhattan Prep GMAT course with about 15 other students. As an aside, that course was probably the worst investment I made during the entire process. Every person in that class intended to apply in Round 2, but of the five students who completed the course, I was the only one who successfully applied and was admitted to business school that year. I can honestly attribute that outcome to Kelsey.

As a former varsity student-athlete, I never went through the traditional college application process, so I had little understanding of what applying to schools actually entailed. During our first conversation, Kelsey was refreshingly honest. She made it clear that what I wanted to accomplish would be extremely difficult and that success would require significant sacrifices and commitment on my part. She did not try to “sell” me on anything (in fact, she emphasized from day one that this would be a true partnership).

At first, that honesty intimidated me and probably even discouraged me a little. But in hindsight, it was exactly the push I needed. At that point in August, I had no standardized test preparation or experience and virtually no understanding of the application process. Kelsey advised me to focus exclusively on test prep for the next few weeks and said she would check back in once I had made progress. Importantly, she intentionally held off on charging me for services because she wanted to make sure I could first achieve the scores necessary to realistically apply on time. Even while we paused formally working together, she continued checking in and making sure I stayed on track.

By mid-September, Kelsey and I set an ambitious goal: applying to seven schools on4 T-15 and six M7 programs. Rather than locking into a large package upfront, we decided to evaluate my progress as we went before committing to more. Somehow, by the final days before the R2 deadline, we achieved exactly what we had set out to do.

As a former athlete who has worked with many high-performance coaches, I can confidently say there are very few people who master the art of coaching (and client services) the way Kelsey does. She does not sugarcoat anything. She is incredibly fair, honest, and effective (both in how she bills her time and in how she improves every aspect of an application). Throughout the process, Kelsey was there for me on both the best and worst days. There were moments when I genuinely did not think I could keep going or believed I would never make it to the finish line. Every single time, Kelsey pushed me forward.

Kelsey Kephart was, without a doubt, the largest contributing factor to my successful application to Haas School of Business at Berkeley.

I came to her with what must have seemed a tangle of experiences, questions, and wants to work through in pulling off a successful application process. She deftly advised and, oftentimes, carried me through making sense of my non-standard career path.

From a human perspective: In hiring Kelsey you don’t just get an application consultant. She will get to know you, your story, and how best to get you where you want to go. She gave me 100% every day we worked together and demanded the same from me. She was extremely personable and I could tell immediately that she truly cared about a successful outcome and took pride in what we were working on.

From a customer perspective: Kelsey consistently responded and returned items we worked on faster and at a higher quality than I have seen in my own professional experience. I have a very unique path to get to where I’m at today. I had a miserable undergrad education experience and truly didn’t apply myself enough (with a dash of anxiety!), which resulted in a 2.6. However, I had really good work experience in client-facing roles – most of it at a top consulting firm. I had a 324 on my GRE, so while it was average for some schools, there definitely was work to be done with me. I ended up applying to business school for two consecutive schools, and the only thing I ever touched was the post-interview waitlist with both M7 and T15 schools.

Enter Kelsey. I worked with her somewhat during round 2 of my last cycle and saw how she was an operator and knew that she could get me to school. She’s direct and honest yet super easy to work with. My biggest issue was saying way too many words on a page, and she was able to help streamline my story and put that energy into my essays. I had a focus in marketing that I wanted to do, so I mainly worked on schools with “top” marketing programs that I most aligned. I ended up getting interviews from 3 of them (two M7 and one T15) and immediately waitlisted by one, so Kelsey and I prepped a lot for my interviews. Through Kelsey’s guidance, I felt confident after my interviews, especially from the praise I got from my interviewers. However, I still didn’t get in to any of them and got waitlisted by two of them, most likely because of the GPA.

Kelsey and I worked on my waitlist updates, and she had a great waitlist strategy for me that was impact-based. Eventually, my consistent (but not aggressive) networking and updates paid off, and I eventually got into the T15 school a few months later.

It’s full circle to be writing this interview while in my first year of school, especially with a summer internship in marketing at a blue-chip, strong company, and I don’t think I would’ve been here without Kelsey’s amazing guidance. So thank you to Kelsey, I’m super grateful.

How I was sold:

My journey to business school was far from conventional. I’ve worked full-time since I was 17 years old, including while earning my undergraduate degree later in life at 27. As a non-traditional candidate with less-than-ideal statistics and little time to finish my applications, I entered the home stretch of my application cycle in a state of panic. As a non-traditional candidate from a company with zero name recognition, work gaps, etc, I was nervous about my chances at top MBA programs. I had intro calls with almost 10 consultants but most of them told me I was not top-school material. Some straightup said I should be ready to get my heart broken and brushed me off.

I hired Kelsey to help me with Consortium Round 1 for CBS with the $1000 Pre-Submission Package.

Before going with Kelsey, I met with a few other admissions consultants through Leland. The Leland intro calls are only 15 minutes, which just isn’t enough time to get to know someone. Kelsey offers a 1 hour long free consultation, and she really got to know me and my story organically, and in a very warm way, without sacrificing honesty. I highly recommend at least doing the initial consult, because she can answer a lot of questions for you in that hour together. She also never tried to upsell any of the other services, which I also appreciated.

After opting to go with Kelsey, I submitted a TON of materials to her, including my Consortium essays (a whole other set of essays) and two letters of rec my recommenders shared with me. She reviewed EVERYTHING in a little over a day, including very detailed reviews of transcript, resume, etc (which can get loss in the essay shuffle). She shared a doc of 10 pages of feedback, and then met with me for ~45 minutes on Zoom (vs. 30 minutes advertised). Essentially, she is very generous with her services, which was amazing! I think her thorough feedback was critical to me sharpening a lot of my admissions package – I reworked a lot of essays, meaningfully improved a second recommender’s letter, and totally revised my resume using her guidance. I even took the GRE with her encouragement (after taking the GMAT). Throughout the process, she also answered many, many random questions I had, and just provided a lot of moral support in a very ambiguous and stressful process.

I ended up getting full-tuition scholarships at both CBS and Stern, so it was 100% worth that upfront investment.

If you are looking for a consultant, I think you can stop searching. I talked to other consultants and used the ApplicantLab, but right from the beginning I felt that Kelsey was invested in me and my story. She once told me that she is a magician, and I now believe it is true because I got into M7 with a $100k scholarship after 2 years of rejections. I didn’t even want to reapply after those rejections, but she convinced me that I had a chance, and was actually angry for me that I didn’t get in.
She says in the intro that her “superpower is helping applicants craft materials that sound and feel like them” and that she achieves “this by simplifying the application process, providing individualized and tailored advice, and spending time to deeply understand you”. I can attest that she means this 100%. She will provide tailored and very detailed advice on ways to improve every little part of your application (and I mean every little part). She will simplify it by stating targets and needed deadlines in each step. She will make your material sound like you, because she will bring the best out of you. Throughout this process, I realized that I actually was not that boring and had challenges that I thought were not that impactful, but actually are.
But she will also challenge you on your decisions and every sentence you write the same way adcoms will challenge you. That way your application and you as well are fully prepared for adcoms. I had to prove to her why I had to apply to M7 and not other schools, and it helped me to outline (first of all for myself) the whole path of my MBA and planned post-MBA journey, which gave me confidence that I am the right fit for these schools. This also laid down the foundation for the interview, because I knew what I wanted and needed from schools.
Kelsey prepared me for the interview as well. I am an introverted person and was a bit nervous about this part of the process. With her help it was like a walk in the park, I felt so confident and prepared. She knew exactly what questions will be, how to prepare and structure answers, and what to do in unexpected scenarios.
She is also invested in you and your application emotionally, so she will ride highs and lows with you and will be your friend throughout this process who will encourage and support you. Given how reasonable her pricing is, I think you receive much, much more than you pay.
The only thing I regret is that I hadn’t started working with her earlier.

To be honest, I had approximately 7-8 “intro” calls with other consulting services and Kelsey was truly different.
