Grew up in Chicago, attended a big 10 university, and worked at a bank in Chicago before pivoting to Consulting, where I currently work with banks on strategy and technology engagements. I’m looking for a new challenge, though. I lived abroad in college and want that experience again, so I’m looking at schools w/a strong international presence.

1) Diagnosed with a serious chronic disease and battled it into remission while continuing to work full time. 2) Successfully managed large-scale, multi-million tech implementations (namely Salesforce CRM, nCino LOS) at several middle-market banks in the U.S.
I’d like to stay in Consulting, but want to pivot to a multi-national firm with lots of opportunities for international exposure/engagements. Ideally, I’d like to live abroad post-MBA, preferably in Western Europe.

Hi Mr. International Consultant, I’m Kristen from MBA Prep School. I think you have a pretty solid foundation for the school’s you are targeting. I like your international experience and career move from finance to consulting. Many individuals utilize an MBA to make a career pivot and you’ve already managed to do so, which is impressive. Some questions the Admissions Committee will have: what motivated you to make that switch and why do you need an MBA to stay in consulting but make a jump to a multi-national firm? What was it about your abroad experience that has made you want to now live and work abroad? This will be especially important for the international schools you identified. Consultants often fear they will get lumped …

What was it about your abroad experience that has made you want to now live and work abroad? This will be especially important for the international schools you identified. Consultants often fear they will get lumped together in the admissions process, so differentiating yourself and making sure you clearly communicate your plans will help you stand out. I would also advise you to consider taking the GMAT again, or perhaps trying the GRE. This is another component that could help you compete. I do think you have a good shot at these schools, and we’d be happy to help you further!
Dear Mr. International Consultant, I’m Lisa Cummings of Stratus Admissions. You have an interesting background and story, sorry to hear about your illness but you clearly have a lot of grit and determination to get through all of that while working. Your stats put you in the zone for your target schools and I think it makes a lot of sense to be looking at international schools if your goal is to be in Western Europe post degree. I’ve listed your odds at 20% which is slightly above HEC’s acceptance rate. I like your community involvement and would want to know more about that. No matter where you apply, you’ll want to build out your narrative to explain your move from banking into consulting …

No matter where you apply, you’ll want to build out your narrative to explain your move from banking into consulting and now your goal of working in a larger consultancy. This is a logical progression, especially given your work on International engagements but they will want to know your reasons for making a pivot. For the European schools you ‘ll also want to be clear about why you want to study abroad and specifically why you want to be in that country. What do they have to offer and what will you bring to the international cohort. Bonne chance!
Mr. International Consultant, Melisa here from Stratus Admissions. Love that you want to live abroad – I highly recommend it! And you’ve chosen a nice set of schools to set you up in Europe post-MBA. You’ve got nice work experience with what sounds like some significant leadership in large scale tech implementations. Your challenge will be differentiating yourself from other consultants. And explaining why you want to live abroad. What do you hope to do with your MBA and why do you need it to get there? Long term, where do you see yourself? Staying in consulting or moving to industry? This story needs to be compelling and authentic to help you stand out. Your GMAT is below Georgetown’s average but your GPA is slightly …

In order to compete with other consultants – you may want to try and the the GMAT again and see if you could get it up a bit. Overall, with a strong story, I think you are on odds at Georgetown. And I think your chances are equally positive at the international schools you’ve identified. Best of luck!
