Hi Mr. M&A Analyst, This is Debbie Choy, Senior Consultant at mbaMission. I think you have a lot of strengths going for you – your strong work experience, community leadership, and past collegiate sports achievements! Do weave in these personal stories to really show AdCom different sides of yourself. I also like that you have already pivoted into an operating role within the media industry – this shows that you’re well on your way towards your future career goals. The media industry is also differentiated as there aren’t many b-school candidates from this sector. That said, be sure to clearly articulate how an MBA will help you achieve your future goals. What will b-school teach you that you aren’t learning on the job? Finally, your GPA …

What will b-school teach you that you aren’t learning on the job? Finally, your GPA and GRE scores are a concern. If there were any circumstances that affected your GPA, do consider explaining this in your applications. Although AdCom evaluates your profile holistically, your scores could be a slight handicap, which is why I also encourage you to cast a wide net – consider UCLA and USC to be close to the media industry. Wishing you the best in your MBA journey!
Mr. M&A Analyst – Thanks for posting your profile. Susan Cera here from Stratus.
I like that you have already made a transition over to the media industry and have valuable experience that you can bring to the program.
I think the weakest part of your profile is your stats – with both your GRE and GPA below the averages. Unfortunately, CBS really cares about stats. I would encourage you to retake the GRE or possibly take a look at the GMAT.

If you ultimately want to return to the media industry, you need to be very clear about WHY you need an MBA and a stint in management consulting only to end up back where you are now. What areas do you need to develop? How will CBS help? How will YOU add value to the CBS cohort.
If you want to be in an MBA program next fall, I would suggest you broaden your list. UCLA, USC and NYU would all position you well to transition to consulting then back to media. The relationships you build in either NYC or LA will be instrumental to remaining connected to the industry players.
I’m working with a former college athlete from Weslyan right now! Reach out if you would like a profile evaluation.
