I am a current Teach For America corps member, fresh out of graduation. My reason for graduating late is that I served a LDS (Mormon) mission Slovakia from 2013-2015. I joined Teach For America so that I can get a feel for the problems confronting public education, but my long term plan is to have a larger impact through strategy consulting schools.

Hi Mr. Teach for America, this is Kristen from MBA Prep School. As a former elementary education major, I applaud you for your work with TFA. Admissions officers will love your dedication to this cause as well. I definitely reviewed my fair share of TFA applicants during my time as an admissions officer at MIT Sloan. You have a solid academic background at BYU and a great GMAT score, and you are working at a fantastic organization. And your post-MBA plan is very achievable and completely makes sense to me. The challenge I see in your case is that you have not transitioned out of TFA yet and onto the next big thing. Here’s why that can sometimes (note, I said sometimes) create a hurdle …

You have a solid academic background at BYU and a great GMAT score, and you are working at a fantastic organization. And your post-MBA plan is very achievable and completely makes sense to me. The challenge I see in your case is that you have not transitioned out of TFA yet and onto the next big thing. Here’s why that can sometimes (note, I said sometimes) create a hurdle for an applicant. As a TFA teacher, your quantifiable outcomes are going to be very different from those of applicants in more traditional pre-MBA roles. for someone with a background in education and passion for equal access, your results bringing up your students’ performance are amazing. The responsibility you have is to translate that into a business context and scale. The strongest TFA applicants I interviewed had either already moved onto their next role that was more business-related, or they were still in the middle of their commitment but were finding other ways outside of the classroom to create an impact (whether it was through training new volunteers or getting involved with their school on the administrative level, etc.). The impact of their work went beyond their students. Schools like Sloan and Booth will be expecting to see that broader scope of influence and leadership, which I can’t tell from your profile if you have had yet (I get the sense some of your extracurriculars relate to this type of engagement). I’d be happy to chat with you further about the details of your TFA impact to help you pull out more of your successes to highlight. I do like your odds at Yale, NYU, Darden, and UCLA and think you have great things to bring to an MBA program!
