UCLA Anderson is founded on the Three Pillars: Share Success, Think Fearlessly, and Drive Change. Which pillar resonates most with you and why? Share Success is the pillar that most drew me to Anderson. The collaborative culture places value on the collective rather than the individual, and one person’s success is the group’s success. I’m most energized working alongside others to achieve a common goal, and I love the idea that shared success is deeply rooted within Anderson’s culture, from group projects to interview prep to student groups.

What makes Los Angeles such a great place to earn an MBA? Los Angeles is a major cultural hub with endless opportunity for new experiences. With a wide variety of local industries, amazing food, frequent cultural events, and an extremely diverse community, it’s easy to seek out novel ideas and try new things. There is also so much to explore beyond LA, from the mountains to the beach – it’s hard to decide where to start!

Aside from your classmates and location, what was the key part of UCLA Anderson’s MBA programming that led you to choose this business school and why was it so important to you? When applying to MBA programs, I was looking for schools with a strong connection to the entertainment world. UCLA stood out not only due to the location but also for its unique opportunities to build my industry expertise. The Entertainment Specialization, along with the Entertainment Management Association (EMA) and the Center for Management of Enterprise in Media, Entertainment & Sports (MEMES), will provide a springboard for breaking into a notoriously relationship-driven industry.

What course, club or activity excites you the most at UCLA Anderson?  I’m extremely excited to get involved with Out@Anderson. I was a member of our LGBT group at Facebook Austin, and it was a great way to get to know people and build a community and support system outside of my immediate team. I’m looking forward to building similar connections within O@A and hope to take on a leadership role when the time is right. Also, I can’t wait for the ski trip – after five years in Texas, I’ll definitely be taking advantage of living so close to the mountains!

Describe your biggest accomplishment in your career so far: About halfway through my time at Facebook, an opportunity came up to join the newly-formed Health team. I had no prior industry experience, but I recognized the opportunity to shape the narrative on a scrappy, nimble team. Two years later, I had established myself as an industry expert and had helped to cement the Health team’s reputation as a consistent driver of growth and innovation. Leaning into the uncertainty helped me to grow personally and professionally and I believe was an important part in my taking the leap from being fully employed to being a full-time student in order to achieve my long-term goals.

How did COVID-19 change your perspective on your career and your life in general? I’ve always been passionate about film and television, driven by a desire to explore unfamiliar territory and understand diverse perspectives. The physical isolation brought about by the pandemic—not to mention divisiveness over the pandemic response—has placed increased importance and urgency on my career goals. I hope to pivot into a marketing role in streaming film & television, where I will be able to connect people and expand perspectives through meaningful storytelling.

What led you to pursue an MBA at this point and what do you hope to do after graduation? In my previous role, I focused on bringing brands’ stories to life through their Facebook advertising. An MBA will help me to zoom out in my career, providing me with the strategic thinking and leadership skills necessary to lead the creation of a brand marketing strategy in streaming media.

What other MBA programs did you apply to? NYU Stern, Harvard Business School, Columbia Business School
