A Goal To Be The World’s Biggest School

The former managing director of McKinsey & Co., Rajat Gupta, wants to make the Indian School of Business the largest business school in the world. At least that’s what the Times of India is reporting. Speaking to reporters in India, Gupta, who is chairman of ISB, said he expects to reach this goal within five years.

He hopes to achieve the goal by doubling the capacity of the business school once its new campus in Mohali is operational. Although it opened its doors only nine years ago, the privately funded ISB is rated number one in India in the MBA rankings by The Financial Times. It fails to make the Poets&Quants list of the top 30 non-U.S. business schools.

Oddly, however, a simple doubling of the school’s graduates would hardly make ISB the largest school in the world. There are many other schools that have total MBA enrollments far larger than 1,200 and many other schools that graduate more than 1,200 students per year.

Located in a Hyderabad suburb, the school offers a 12-month MBA program and has just under 600 students.

ISB gets seven applications for each seat, so it is building a second campus in Mohali in Punjab which will open in 2012.
