SOM SCHOLARSHIPS WILL EXCEED 10% OF GROSS TUITION RECEIPTS NEXT YEAR, MORE THAN DOUBLE THREE YEARS AGO

“But the main thing is to support students and faculty who are setting the right tone and make sure that this is not a question of competing within the school. it’s getting our students ready for the very tough environment outside. For those people who view this as a certification exercise, i don’t think so. This is a value-added exercise. We are going to work on it, and we are working on it.”

Snyder also said that scholarship support for MBA candidates at Yale has risen substantially since his arrival as dean and scholarships remain one of his top funding priorities. The amount of MBA scholarship money at Yale, he said, was “less than 5% of total gross MBA tuition” three years ago. “Next year that percentage will exceed 10% despite the fact that the list price of tuition has gone up and the number of students have gone up,” Snyder added. “So the denominator in that fraction has gone up quite a bit, but we have been able to increase our scholarship budget disproportionately. But we have to keep on that path because 10% is still a low number. Some schools are below that but we think we have to get much higher and it takes a lot of support. Frankly, the school had a view that it was somewhat of a unique place and it didn’t need to offer a lot of scholarships.”
