Blast from the Past:

Why the MBA Is Now the Most Popular Masters Degree

You’ve come a long way, baby! Back in 1900, Dartmouth College’s Tuck School of Business launched the first MBA program. And it attracted four students. Fast forward to 2012 and you’ll find 191,571 students earned advanced degrees in business. As a result – for the first time ever – business has surpassed all other disciplines as the most degree in postgraduate education…even beating out education.

These days, 25.4% of advanced degrees come from the business disciplines, more than double its percentage in 1970. So what’s behind this explosive growth? Last year, John Byrne, editor-in-chief of Poets&Quants, tackled this question in his expansive look at how MBA programs became so popular. From employer sponsorship to career mobility to rising salaries, check out why business school enrollment has accelerated – along with a few predictions on what you can expect in the future.
