International Leadership and Organizational Behavior

School: SDA Bocconi

Platform: Coursera

Registration Link: REGISTER HERE

Start Date: September 4, 2017 (6 Weeks Long)

Workload: 4-6 Hours Per Week

Instructor: Franz Wohlgezogen

Credentials: An assistant professor at SDA Bocconi, Wohlgezogen teaches courses in negotiation, organization theory, and leadership in change management. Before entering academia, he held consulting and leadership roles at Bayer, MTAC, and Kaiser Permanente, where he worked with pharmaceutical, chemical, and manufacturing clients in the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Australia.  Wohlgezogen is currently finishing up his doctorate at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management – and his work has already been published in the Harvard Business Review, the Stanford Social Innovation Review, and the Journal of Management.

Graded: Students can receive a verified certificate for successfully completing the course for $49.

Description: If you aspire to leadership, you’ll eventually need to manage overseas operations, teams, clients, and partners. Chances are, they will hold different perceptions, expectations, and traditions than you do. And that’s a recipe for misinterpretations, strain, and outright conflict. Sure, it can take a lifetime to master cultural contexts and nuances. As boundaries gradually disintegrate, it pays for leaders to understand how their behaviors and decisions will be interpreted at both an organizational and cultural level.  In this course, students will gain greater self-awareness, as they learn how to use intercultural dynamics to communicate, motivate, and grow relationships with stakeholders globally. They will study how to avoid intercultural traps, decode culture, increase their social capital, and manage conflicts. The course will consist of 10-15 minute lecture videos, PowerPoints, readings, quizzes, and optional assignments.

Review: “Nice well-organized course with an interesting professor. I have a pleasure not only listening but also viewing the lectures — if Coursera courses nominated for Oscars this would got one for Best Cinematography. Theory is accompanied with VIP interviews, case studies with experts and Bocconi students. Peer-to-peer assignment allows to apply some theory to a real life situation from your own experience. Quizzes are very simple, statement of accomplishments can be easily gained. You should not miss the forum activity with an optional but useful discussion topics involving interesting people from all over the world.” For additional reviews, click here.
