Supply Chain Technology and Systems

School: MIT

Platform: edX

Registration Link: REGISTER HERE

Start Date: September 19, 2017 (11 Weeks Long)

Workload: 8-12 Hours Per Week

Instructor: Chris Caplice

Credentials: Dr. Caplice teaches logistics and supply management at MIT, ranked #1 (graduate) and #2 (undergraduate) in this field. He oversees the MIT Freight Lab, which researches ways to improve the design and management of freight transportation. He also manages the MIT Center for Transportation and Logistics and MIT’s Global SCALE Network. Caplice, who holds a Ph.D. from the University of Texas, also serves as the chief scientist for Chainalytics, a supply chain consulting firm.

Graded: Students who complete all course requirements can purchase a verified certificate for $150.

Description: UPS is famous for the slogan, “I love logistics.” It certainly puts a friendly face on a complex chain. Indeed, logistics is a process that involves scheduling, moving, tracking, and replenishing, with the goal of streamlining steps, speeding movement, cutting costs, and satisfying stakeholders. It isn’t hard to design a operational system on paper. Getting the pieces together successively is the tricky part. The degree of difficulty has only been amplified and accelerated by technology, whose systems must interact in harmony with all other steps in the process.

In this course, Caplice will focus on three areas: technology fundamentals, core logistics systems, and data analysis. Over 11 weeks, students will review “project management and software processes, data modeling, UML, relational databases and SQL.” In addition, the course will cover internet technologies like “XML, web services, and service-oriented architectures” and supply chain systems like “ERP, WMS, and TMS” — with an emphasis on how they work and where they’re used.

Review: No reviews.

Additional Note:  This course is part of MIT’s MicroMaster’s program in supply chain management. To learn more about these courses and register for them, click here.
