MBA Roundup: The Worst Reasons To Get An MBA

The Worst Reasons To Get An MBA

MarketWatch: “A lot more people are applying to business school these days. But that doesn’t mean a master’s of business administration degree is right for everyone, experts say — or that now is the best time to apply.

The number of applications for full-time, in-person M.B.A. programs increased 32% this year, according to an October survey from the Graduate Management Admission Council.

The degree definitely comes with some perks: M.B.A. graduates have a median starting salary that’s 73% higher than what those with just a bachelor’s degree make, according to another recent GMAC survey.

And in the upper echelons of the corporate world, a graduate business degree can be a necessity: Many of the country’s most high-profile business leaders, including Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook and JPMorgan Chase and CEO Jamie Dimon, have an M.B.A. on their résumé.

Still, with tuition costs that can reach into the six figures, school leaders and admissions experts told MarketWatch that it’s important for prospective students to think carefully before deciding on business school.

“It costs more than buying a new car, and I do feel like sometimes people put more thought into buying a new car than getting an M.B.A.,” said Maciek Nowak, dean of the Peter J. Tobin College of Business at St. John’s University in Queens, N.Y.”
