What makes the case method so attractive as a means to learn and become a better manager? For me, the case method is a much more engaging and effective way to learn. I wanted to make the most out of my MBA — and that included a strong academic experience where I’d stay involved and challenged. The case method forces you to come prepared every single day, ready to contribute, think critically, and learn from your peers. In contrast to traditional teaching methods, where I often studied just to pass the exam and then quickly forgot the material, the case method encourages real understanding through discussion and practical application. It helps build the kind of decision-making and leadership skills I’m hoping to develop throughout the MBA.

Aside from cases and classmates, what was the key part of Virginia Darden’s MBA programming that led you to choose this business school and why was it so important to you? The biggest factor that led me to choose Darden was the community. During my research and networking prior to applying, I had the chance to connect with faculty, alumni, and members of the admissions team — and everyone I spoke to was incredibly welcoming and generous with their time. I felt a genuine sense of belonging that was unique to Darden. My former boss once told me, “You’ll end up at the program that best fits who you are and positions you to succeed,” and I couldn’t agree more. I’m confident that Darden is exactly where I’m meant to be — both personally and professionally. I’m truly grateful to the school for giving me this opportunity, and I’m determined to make the most of it.

What course, club, or activity excites you the most at Virginia Darden? I’m especially excited about the Darden Cup — I’m very competitive by nature, and I love how it brings the class together through friendly competition and shared experiences. It’s a fun and unique way to build camaraderie and create lasting bonds. I’m also really looking forward to joining the Darden Finance Club. After spending seven years in private equity and now planning to recruit for investment banking, I see the club as a great platform to deepen my technical and industry knowledge, learn from peers with diverse experiences, and contribute by sharing my own background in PE.

What are your early impressions of Charlottesville? I’m really enjoying Charlottesville so far! Coming from Peru, I always dreamed of living in a college town — and Charlottesville has been exactly the kind of place I imagined. There’s a great sense of community here, and I love how everything feels so connected to the university. The mix of nature, local charm, and student energy makes it a unique place to be. Everyone I’ve met has been incredibly friendly and welcoming, which has made settling in a lot easier.

Describe your biggest accomplishment in your career so far: One of my proudest career accomplishments was working alongside one of my biggest professional mentors and friends, Gerardo Mendoza, on the acquisition of a minority stake in Melinda’s — the fastest growing hot sauce company in the U.S. We structured a capital injection that fueled the company’s next stage of growth, supporting its expansion and operational scaling. Throughout the process, I also had the opportunity to collaborate closely with Greg Figueroa, Melinda’s CEO, whose leadership and strategic mindset I greatly admired. The investment has been a strong success, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to watch Melinda’s continue to grow and establish itself as a top brand in the hot sauce market. If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend trying one of their sauces! (My personal favorite is the Polynesian).

What is your unique quality that will enable you to make a big contribution to the Class of 2027? Why? One quality that I believe will enable me to make a meaningful contribution to the Class of 2027 is my intellectual curiosity. It has been a driving force throughout my career — especially in finance, where I’ve constantly sought to understand not just the numbers, but the broader context behind every deal and decision. Beyond my professional path, I’m someone who genuinely enjoys learning about new topics, exploring different cultures, and engaging with people who challenge my thinking. I believe this mindset will allow me to bring thoughtful questions, fresh perspectives, and a deep level of engagement to both classroom discussions and peer conversations — helping to foster a more dynamic and collaborative learning environment at Darden.

What advice would you give to help potential applicants gain admission into Virginia Darden’s MBA program? Take the time to genuinely connect with students, alumni, and admissions — Darden’s tight-knit community values authenticity, and your ability to demonstrate that you truly want to be here matters. Darden is a unique program, known for its high-impact case method, hands-on faculty engagement, and collaborative culture.
