Justin Marshall has been an MBA admissions consultant since 2007, making him a grizzled veteran of the industry. In that time, he has worked with more than 500 successful applicants, 80% of whom have attended M7 programs.
So, what’s his secret sauce? In a word, storytelling.
Before becoming an admission consultant, Justin wrote stories for a living. He was an award-winning screenwriter whose films screened at Cannes, Tribeca, and on PBS; a seasoned journalist who specialized in biographical articles; a published author (of a book on essay writing, no less); the managing editor of a popular website; and a ghost writer for countless articles, films, commercials, and documentaries. Through these experiences, Justin became an expert on narrative structure, character development, and promotional communications – skills which just happen to be vital to successful admissions essays. Everything else he learned directly as an admission reader and/or through interviews conducted with top MBA admissions directors.
Justin’s approach can best be described as intimate. He works closely with a small number of clients each round. While many firms provide their clients with mass-produced essay templates, Justin conducts detailed brainstorming, outline, and notes sessions via phone/Zoom. He coaxes out his candidates’ life experiences and challenges them to “dig deep” to uncover the stories that define who they are, how they contribute to their communities, and what their true leadership style is. He brings a highly strategic mindset to the table, but never overlooks the human element (the part that actually gets you accepted). He works nights, weekends, and overtime to ensure that his clients not only get into their dream school, but also survive the application process with only minimal PTSD.
Justin Marshall Consulting may not be the most creatively named LLC, but you can’t argue with our success:
• Since 2015, more than 50% of our candidates who applied to HBS, GSB, and Wharton have been accepted to at least one of the schools.
• 79% of our Wharton applicants have been accepted to the school.
• More than 80% of our candidates have been accepted to M7 schools.
• 98% of our business comes through word-of-mouth reviews (happy and successful candidates, not paid marketing).

I am very thankful for the experience I had working with Justin throughout the process. Justin played a critical role during my application process – providing me with encouragement through and through, and also providing constructive / thoughtful feedback when needed. Justin has so much experience, and getting his views and thoughts at various stages of the process was incredibly helpful. I felt I was able to fully trust Justin during this demanding process. Justin also spent so much time with me in order to better understand my story, my personality, and my strengths and weaknesses – something that really benefitted our working relationship. To anyone aiming for the top schools, I would highly recommend working with Justin!
Justin was a wonderful consultant to work with across my R1 MBA applications. He played an integral role in helping me cultivate my why MBA and school-specific essays. He spent a lot of time working with me to extract the “so what” and the deeper “why” behind my career motivations, ensuring that my professional goals aligned with my personal narrative. Justin always tried to be as flexible as possible to accommodate my schedule. Besides being an amazing MBA coach, Justin is also a great friend (+ therapist) who was there every step along the way, providing huge emotional support! I recommended Justin to my friend who also applied and got into M7, and would HIGHLY recommend him to anyone I know who will apply in upcoming cycles!
What makes Justin such a wonderful consultant and resource is not his ability to tell any story, but his ability to help you tell your story. I felt that Justin truly strived to get to know and capture who I was as a person – rather than just a candidate – and this authentic approach is what truly differentiates him from other consultants. In particular, Justin has a discerning eye for what resonates with schools in a way that is extremely natural. No small detail escapes his notice – even a throwaway line about an old extracurricular, which I would have never thought to incorporate in my HBS application. Furthermore, he is incredibly flexible to work with, and his feedback is thoughtful and thorough. He was a reassuring, supportive presence throughout a stressful application period. I highly, highly recommend working with Justin!
Through and through, Justin always provided honest and constructive feedback. I am incredibly grateful for his honesty and the time he took to get to know me as a person and applicant. It’s no exaggeration that Justin was an integral part of helping me find a voice and story in my life that resonated with select schools. I couldn’t be more thankful, and highly recommend working with him!
Justin was excellent to work with during my R1 application cycle. I appreciated his flexibility and dedication, taking early morning or weekend calls as we dealt with a large time zone difference. In addition to his professionalism and skill, Justin brought a lighthearted attitude and great conversation to the stressful and demanding process, which I was truly grateful for.
I have nothing but incredible things to say about Justin. I started working with Justin a little over a month before Round 3 deadlines (my first round of applications). He helped me identify two schools — Wharton and Kellogg — that would fit me academically, professionally, and culturally. Justin worked around my unpredictable work schedule and he was always available to speak with me, whether I was panicked about a deadline, had questions about an essay, or was nervous for an interview (sometimes hours, or even minutes beforehand). He was an excellent essay critic — he not only helped me structure my professional goals, but also advised on how to effectively communicate those goals in my essays. Justin’s many years of experience means he knows how different schools evaluate applicants and he can draw from previous experiences with other applicants over the years, which is very helpful. Justin was incredibly meticulous and thoughtful in guiding me through this process.
I was ultimately accepted to both schools and I am eternally grateful to Justin for his consistent support and attention. I’ve already recommended him to my friend going through the application process now, and I will absolutely continue to recommend him!
I have nothing but terrific things to say about Justin. I was referred to Justin from an older friend who worked with Justin (he helped him get into Kellogg. Justin is a very calm, easy going person who is kind and personable. I immediately felt at ease when speaking to Justin and sharing my life story with him. I had the comprehensive package and Justin was always available for me, never did he cancel or mention that we were meeting too frequently. Justin is an exceptional writer and really helped me craft all my essays with the perfect narrative. I would recommend Justin to anyone looking to get into a top school. I also trusted Justin so much that I would do whatever he recommended or suggested in terms of my applications. He has been doing this for many years and is a professional. I can’t thank Justin enough because one of the schools I got into was HBS!
