Hi Mr. Busy Bee, Thanks for posting your profile. This is Debbie Choy, Senior Consultant at mbaMission. I think your career trajectory to date sounds impressive. That said, as a more experienced candidate, the Admissions Committee (AdCom) would be very interested in why you’re seeking an MBA now. Be sure to explain why you’d like to move towards the business side as a Technology Consultant. Which area of the MNC would you be interested in joining? Why? Apart from having a solid career goals story, also consider how you could beef up your academics. Your GPA and GMAT scores, being below the averages at Columbia could be a concern for AdCom. Might there be any online business courses you could take to alleviate any potential concerns …

Hi Mr. Banking Consultant, Thanks for posting your profile. This is Debbie Choy, Senior Consultant at mbaMission. I like your strong academics (GPA, GMAT) and solid work experience. These are qualities that the Admissions Committee (AdCom) is seeking. That said, they also want to see demonstrated leadership. Were you in any student leadership roles in college? Or is there an opportunity at work to go beyond your immediate job scope to join a committee? Many firms have recruiting and/or social committees. And they always appreciate when employees go above and beyond to help build the firm’s community. This also helps the firm be a good corporate citizen. I think your profile is strong for Marshall (where the average acceptance rate is around 33%), but it could be even stronger, especially if you are also applying to more competitive programs. WIshing you the best in your MBA journey, and please reach out for a consult if you would like to discuss more.
Mr. Busy Bee – thanks for posting your profile. Susan Cera here from Stratus.
I spent ~10 years with Duke Fuqua admissions committee and about half of that time evaluating and selecting applicants from India. While your 67% is decent (first class, I presume) your GRE is very low so you should plan to retake.
You have more work experience and perhaps more exposure through your entrepreneurial ventures than the average candidate. Be sure to showcase how your background will add value to a business school class. You will absolutely need to clarify your goals. Why do you want to be a tech consultant at an MNC? Is there a particular industry in which you want to work? What do you need from an MBA to be well qualified for the position you are seeking.
Absent any extracurriculars (which you may have but just left out of the profile) you will not stack up to many other candidates who have been engaged during their years in university and in their communities. Given your years of experience, you might want to look at some mid-career busines programs.
Wishing you the best on your application journey.
