Started out with internships (1 yr 2 mos) at the UN and Congress and would love to get into public sector consulting. Likely planning on applying to a dual degree program, as they tend to be kinder to younger applicants and it fits what I want to do. Hoping to go with a strategy-oriented MBA and an MPP. -3 yrs WE total at matriculation

Strong extracurriculars to follow a double major in college and post-grad. Started out as a volunteer in March of this year at a county-level Habitat for Humanity, won Volunteer of the Year, and was nominated to the Board this fall.
Dream outcome is to get into a prestigious school, have an exciting career helping governments and non-profits around the world with strategic decisions. Also considering at one point running for local or state office and seeing where it goes. I always plan to be involved in community service during my life, but would like security as well.

Mr. Community Service, you’ve had some really interesting experiences, from work as an intern at both the U.N. and in Congress to your job as a tech consultant at a Fortune 500 company (with a promotion). Not sure why your two internships would last more than a year but, in some way, that makes those experiences more compelling. Being named Volunteer of the Year for your work with Habitat for Humanity is a big plus and shows great heart and a concern for others beyond yourself. A 3.5 in econ from Michigan is solid and your GRE of 326 is on the mark for Booth which does not reveal its class average GRE scores (but they certaintly wouldn’t be below Harvard which is exactly at …
A 3.5 in econ from Michigan is solid and your GRE of 326 is on the mark for Booth which does not reveal its class average GRE scores (but they certaintly wouldn’t be below Harvard which is exactly at 326). It’s important that the quant side of your GRE is strong because Booth is a more analytical MBA program and lagged in accepting GRE scores. Given your post-MBA goals and your time at the U.N. and Congress, I’m a little surprised that Yale SOM isn’t among your target schools. I frankly think you are a strong fit for Yale and would strongly encourage you to consider the school. In fact, I would replace your first choice school with Yale and keep your other targets, even though your overall GRE is three points under the class average at SOM.
I think you’ve got a lot going for you that some of the other members of the community aren’t recognizing. Tbh, I’m not sure how a 326 GRE stacks up or what the equivalent GMAT is, but a 3.5 GPA is right under the average for admissions. While your work experience is on the slim side for Booth, I think that if you can speak to your experiences with some humility and dig in a bit more to why you want to work in public service (prestige aside), AdCom would appreciate that.
Also – please ignore the comment that someone provided saying that AdCom only cares for MBB. Sure, MBB is great because it’s a competitive space to get into – but it’s not the be all & end all. Top MBA programs pride themselves on diversity of experience, and so only a portion of their class can come from MBB to ensure that.
Good luck to you & remember that even if you don’t get into your top choice, you’ve got time on your side. It’s ok to take a year and re-apply to a favourite.
3 years WE is OK if you come from MBB, not tech consulting
