Hi Mr. High School Teacher, this is Kristen from MBA Prep School. Your profile name does not do you justice here at all! As a former MIT Sloan adcom, I loved TFA applicants but typically found they struggled to demonstrate the kind of leadership and impact that MBA admissions officers are looking for until after they completed their commitment. Reading about how they were able to improve their students’ grades was always heartwarming for me as a former elementary education major, but it was more limited in scope and scale compared to their fellow applicants. You, on the other hand, are already on your way to shaking up the education sector! Between founding and scaling a non-profit and launching a city-wide initiative, you should have plenty of examples of influencing others with quantifiable impact on a large scale. Your GRE score puts you squarely in the zone for HBS and GSB, though your GPA and undergrad reputation fall outside the typical parameters for their admitted students. I do think your accomplishments are impressive for a 23 year old and should capture the attention of admissions officers, but you are also going to be competing with applicants with more work experience under their belt at recognized firms. I definitely think you are interesting enough to have a shot, but would encourage you to expand your school list a bit to include other options. Berkeley Haas, Northwestern Kellogg, Yale SOM, Duke Fuqua, and Michigan Ross all provide stellar pathways for MBAs seeking a career in the non-profit sector. I would be happy to offer you a complimentary consultation to chat more with you about how to strategically position your application for success.
Ok GPA from mediocre university. Decent story. Not enough work experience.
