UK immigrant from Indonesia. I have a passion for older people to help them live healthy life longer after my experience as an informal carer (after work) for an older man next door, who lived alone and suffered from long-term conditions. Outside work, I play soccer with a Sunday League club in London, I like travelling (17 countries, 30+ cities).

Hello Mr. MSc In Finance, Krista Nannery here…Senior Consultant at mbaMission and a former Londoner myself! So over the last six years, I have spoken to exactly one Indonesian MBA candidate. I’m sure there are more out there of course but it does mean that you are more rare. An Indonesian running a start-up in the UK is even more rare and interesting!!
As you ready your applications to Cornell, Stern, and Tepper, I think AdComs are going to want to know a lot about your start-up. Is it financially viable? Has it received funding? Have you participated in any incubators and/or won any awards? Working with the “leading figure for longevity” from the House of Lords is great and gives your start-up more “official-ness” …
As you ready your applications to Cornell, Stern, and Tepper, I think AdComs are going to want to know a lot about your start-up. Is it financially viable? Has it received funding? Have you participated in any incubators and/or won any awards? Working with the “leading figure for longevity” from the House of Lords is great and gives your start-up more “official-ness” but because what you’re doing is so unique and interesting, b-schools will probably want to know more.
I also recommend that you show any results from your start-up. Any impact that you are having…how many clients do you have? How many end-users? Details will be helpful here in helping the AdCom understand your work because it is so unique.
On the stats front, be aware that your GPA is lower than what most AdComs would like to see. That’s not to say you won’t be successful in this process, but look for ways to make it clear that you will do well in b-school. (Perhaps you did really well in your MSc, which might help.) Definitely write the optional essay to address your GPA head-on.
For your GMAT, I’ve seen 700 be successful at Johnson and Tepper before. Stern might be a bit harder. So if you have it in you, consider taking the exam again. Even 710 will put you in a better position.
For the VC long-term goal, when pitching it, make sure it’s clear that you have VC exposure already. VC is notoriously difficult to break into without the network and without previous financial success.
Very intrigued by the national-level amateur soccer, especially if you are doing that in the UK!! That makes you even more interesting.
So…in sum…you have a lot of unique things going for you but I’d love to see another GMAT attempt…
You’re a great candidate and a great person, I admire your career and goals. However, Cornell and Tepper may not be as good a fit for your goals as NYU Stern, Darden, Duke, Oxford Saïd, and Cambridge Judge. Good luck!
