Young professionals fantasize about becoming the next Steve Jobs. The former Apple CEO represents entrepreneurial, strategic, and visionary spirit. Under Jobs’ leadership, Apple was known for its marketing and product design genius, yet, its finances and operations were a mess. Cook changed all that and that is why I admire him. Similar to Cook, I am operational and tactical. I would always be the first to ask “How do we get it done?” every time there is an opportunity/problem presented. Strategy and vision are important, but execution is the key differentiator.

Moreover, I was able to grow my career at Deloitte and establish myself as an expert in my field, which eventually led me to lead 3 book publications for Deloitte. – I founded a scholarship for 1st gen highschoolers in Vietnam.
I plan to go back to my home country of Vietnam and run the family business, which is one of the top exporters of Seafood in Vietnam. I hope that the MBA program can widen my knowledge of managing a company and help expand my network for future company expansion to other markets.

I have to admit that I love the idea of your dream to be the Tim Cook of seafood. He is an operational genius and responsible for successfully implementing one of the most valuable supply chain networks in the world. But at the end of the day, this all comes down to the present-day you and whether you have what it takes to get into one of the most highly selective business schools in the world: MIT Sloan. There is no doubt you have a good shot. While your GMAT score is below the class average for Sloan and your undergraduate degree does not come from an Ivy, public Ivy or near Ivy school, your work experience at Deloitte has shown that you have what it takes to be highly successful. Your goal will be to leverage that experience in your application and personal letter to MIT in a convincing way to offset the two potential issues you have in your candidacy. Your being an author is another impressive accomplishment. I am also surmising that you are a first gen college grad as evidenced by the scholarship you created. And because you are Vietnamese and not Indian, you will not fall into that overpopulated pool of Indian engineers who apply to MIT. The fact that you plan to return to your home country and work for your family business is also a plus because it means that any school that accepts you will not have to worry about getting you a job. By the way, Duke Fuqua is also a good choice for you but so would Michigan Ross, UVA Darden or Dartmouth Tuck. Just tossing a few other options out for you to consider. Good luck to you!
