Classic finance background of two years of investment banking at a top firm plus four years of private equity. Have been hired into a new impact/ESG-focused leadership role, but would prefer to take two years to work on start-up concepts and weigh transitioning into an earlier-stage investing role within my current industry.

Adopted and first-generation college student. Paid my way through school and have also paid for my siblings using my earnings. Left a large-cap PE job to be in a position to take care of adopted siblings and parents who fell ill a few years ago. Spend two Saturdays a month doing volunteer work, largely for causes related to income disparity.
Develop existing start-up concepts while at school and find potential partners to launch the concepts. If there’s limited traction, I would transition to an earlier stage investing role within the industry with players whom I already have a relationship with.

Try to give HBS more detail about what really drives you—all while having your habit of leadership qualities shine like the enhancing wallpaper backdrop to the room that subtly yet powerfully makes a statement on your behalf. …
