About Me:

I am a deferred admission program applicant who is a first-generation engineer with a BS and MS in industrial and systems engineering. I have internship experiences working in the consulting sector and for the largest oil and gas company in the world. I am very enthusiastic about the impact I have been able to have on my college campus, specifically through serving as Chapter President of my large student organization. When I was 18 years old my family adopted teenage twins who did not come from a good educational district. These new additions to my family really opened my eyes to the educational opportunity gaps apparent in our nation. Because of this, 2 years ago I founded an educational software start-up which aims to close this gap for disadvantaged students. This project has truly been a labor of love for me and I would like to run it full-time in the future.

Post MBA Goal:

My goal is to defer my enrollment for 4 years. For the first 3 years I want to work for the consulting firm (Big 4) I already accepted a position at, learning as much as I can. For the remaining year, I want to work as an entrepreneur for the start-up I began. After the MBA, I want to return to work at my start-up.

To maximize your chances, you’ll want to fully communicate your professional and personal impact on your resume (with an emphasis on leadership), explain the motivations behind your career goals (which you should be able to do quite easily, based on how well you have explained them here), and make a case for how each program will help you attain these goals based on their resources within and outside of the classroom.

One thing I always mention to deferred candidates: we’ve seen that admissions is not only competitive but also highly unpredictable. In other words, it’s tough to assess from profiles who’ll make the cut. However, do know that there is absolutely no downside to applying – if the deferred programs don’t work out, it will not penalize your “regular” MBA application down the road. And, I have a strong feeling that you’ll have a successful career in any case. Hope that helps – best of luck!

There are a few things in your background that will be very appealing to deferred admit programs in general. Because you have an engineering background, you are not in the MBA pipeline as much as someone who studied business and many of the deferred admit programs are looking to attract talent that might not be thinking about an MBA. However, I’m not sure how much benefit you have given that you are heading into the consulting pipeline—which is very traditional on the MBA route. But I still see your engineering degree as a positive and …

The startup aimed at helping to fill educational gaps is something that will be very interesting to MBA programs so be sure to highlight your accomplishments and impact when you speak about this. I also think your sorority leadership is very strong too—I like the way you have framed this in noting that you led a 350 person organization and that you have also managed a $300k budget and served on an international task force. I agree with the other experts that it can be hard to say who will be successful in the deferred admit process but there is no downside to trying. I think you may also want to look at Darden as well. In your essays I think some of the experiences you gained from your family adopting teenage twins could be very powerful and show some of the motivation for your start-up.
