I have worked at McKinsey for three years, where I have been consistently evaluated among 5% of top performers globally. Since May I’ve been doing an externship at a large and very recognized Brazilian EdTech. In my free time, I do a lot of social work, including coordinating the endowment I co-founded for my university.

During my whole life, I have been very connected to social activities – from teaching Maths to low-income adults who did not finish elementary school to rebuilding schools in Colombian cities that suffered from drug traffic. At McKinsey, I have worked on two crisis projects that required a deep connection with large communities.
I aim to return to McKinsey and develop its early-stage Educational Practice in Brazil. Later, I aim to found my own business to solve the two most pressing issues in the Brazilian educational market: its access and its link to employability.

I’m impressed by your clear commitment to social impact – it’s nice that you can show evidence of this both through your role at McKinsey and also in your extracurriculars. The Edtech involvement in particular interests me given your post-MBA career goals; it’s always impressive to Adcoms when candidates show forward-planning that transcends work/extra-curricular boundaries. I guess the only real issue I see is the combination of a lower than average GPA and GMAT score. Whilst some schools have been vocal about actively seeking a broader class profile and not focusing so intently on metrics, you’ll be aware that your target schools still average around 730, and right up to nearly 740 for Stanford (although their range is obviously much wider). So you need to think about making your profile and essays work as hard for you as possible. What is the hook you are going to use to draw in your reader? Personally, I like your passion for heading back to make an impact in Brazil. One more thing – if you are doing your MBA as a sponsored student, make sure you get meaningful recommendations. Spend time with your recommender/s really working through the strengths you want to highlight, and clarifying concrete examples where you have shone at work – there must be many to give you that outstanding top 5% ranking! You want to focus on those things where you’ve stood out above what will already be an exceptional peer group so those top schools just can’t say no.
