Credentials: Frumkin ranks among the foremost experts in philanthropy. One of his books, Strategic Giving: The Art and Science of Philanthropy, is considered the “benchmark text for the field” by some reviewers. . His 2002 book, On Being Nonprofit, earned the Best Book Award from the Academy of Management’s public and nonprofit section. Frumkin is currently the Professor of Social Policy & Practice at the University of Pennsylvania, where he also serves as the faculty director for the Center for Social Impact Strategy and the director of the Nonprofit Leadership Program.
Graded: Students must complete all required assignments to finish the course.
Description: Changemakers can approach social ills from a variety of angles. In business, some choose social enterprise, developing commercial solutions that tackle social objectives while generating revenue. Others become intrapreneurs, making an impact by championing innovation and new ventures within their organizations. In this case, students will learn how to identify, develop, and sell their ideas. In particular, they will follow a four step process — Define, Design, Pilot, and Scale — to help them launch their own venture in the class, whether it is a social startup or a internal project. In addition, the “course will allow students to systematically think through problems; develop and test an innovative solution; assess risk, competition, and performance; and spread impact in a way that is financially sustainable.”
