Is this the industry and role you envisioned yourself in upon entering the program?

When I entered the program, I had a set of potential career paths in my mind. I approached the experience with an open and intentional mindset, aiming to explore different options and make an informed decision along the way.

Although I returned to the same company after graduation, I transitioned into a completely different role, from Consultant to Chief of Staff. This shift wasn’t something I had initially envisioned, but it became a natural outcome of the journey. Through coursework, conversations with the cohorts and the advisors, internships, and discussions with my company, I gained clarity on my future career. I ultimately chose a path that addressed my pre-MBA uncertainties and aligned with my long-term goals.

Why was HEC Paris and their MBA program the right fit for you among all of the options out there?

HEC Paris stood out to me for several reasons. First, I wanted to immerse myself in a new environment, outside of Japan or the U.S., where I had studied previously, to broaden my global perspective. Second, the program’s exceptional cultural and professional diversity offered a unique opportunity to learn from peers with a wide range of backgrounds. Finally, as one of the top-ranked MBA programs globally, HEC Paris provided not only academic excellence but also a wide array of future career opportunities. These factors combined made it the ideal choice for my personal and professional growth.

How has the program helped you grow personally or professionally since graduating?

The program has significantly shaped the way I approach both work and life. One of the most important lessons was the value of soft skills, especially in environments without clear hierarchies, where people have different goals. I learned how essential it is to collaborate effectively to achieve shared outcomes, and this has had a lasting impact on how I work with others.

What’s a standout moment or memory from your time at HEC Paris that really stuck with you?

One standout memory was realizing that in a flat, diverse environment, leadership doesn’t necessarily stem from technical expertise. Instead it often comes from strong soft skills. I saw firsthand how those who could listen, empathize, and bring people together were the ones who naturally led teams and drove results even without formal authority.

How did you balance your work/school/home life during your degree? What were the biggest challenges?

Balancing different aspects of life during the MBA requires consistent and proactive time management. I made it a habit to manage my schedule holistically, including academic, professional, and personal commitments and ensured that I completed a set of daily tasks. This discipline helped me stay on track and avoid feeling overwhelmed.

The biggest challenges came from dealing with ambiguity, such as applying for internships or navigating the job market. To manage this, I made a point of gathering information early and breaking down each goal into actionable steps that I could incorporate into my schedule.

What are some of the biggest takeaways or skills you gained from the MBA experience?

One of the biggest takeaways was learning to think more broadly and challenge my assumptions. Being surrounded by classmates from diverse industries, cultures, and career paths constantly pushed me to see problems from new angles and question my own biases. This environment not only expanded my perspective but also deepened my appreciation for the different ways people pursue success. Seeing how dedicated everyone was, whether in academics, their careers, or entrepreneurial ventures, motivated me to raise my own standards and stay focused on my goals.

What is your advice for those who are considering applying to the HEC Paris MBA program?

My advice would be to enter the program with a clear sense of purpose. The MBA journey goes by quickly, and without a strong intention, it’s easy to lose focus. Given the significant investment (time, tuition, and opportunity cost) it’s important to be intentional about what you want to gain and how you’ll make the most of the experience. Also, make the most of the people around you. The HEC community is incredibly diverse and inspiring, and there’s so much to learn through meaningful interactions.
