mbaMission, one of the leading MBA admission consulting firms, has been sold for an undisclosed sum to Sacramento-based Guidewell Education.

Guidewell, backed by an estimated $58 million in private equity funding, has been attempting a roll-up strategy in the highly fragmented college services market. mbaMission is its seventh educational brand and its first in the graduate business school space.

With more than 50 MBA admission consultants, mbaMission has been the most favorably reviewed large MBA admissions consulting firm in the world for five consecutive years (see The Top MBA Admissions Consulting Firms Of 2025). mbaMission founder and CEO Jeremy Shinewald as well as Aimee Lukin, head of marketing and operations for mbaMission and Accepted, will be staying on to lead Guidewell’s new graduate division.

DEAL FOR MBAMISSION FOLLOWS A PE FIRM’S INVESTMENT IN GUIDEWELL

The acquisition follows what was termed a “strategic growth investment” in September from Eagle Merchant Partners, an Atlanta-based private equity firm that invests in founder-owned, lower middle-market companies in the consumer and commercial services sectors in the U.S. Eight months ago, New York-based private equity firm Graycliff Partners LP made a $43 million investment in Guidewell. In 2022 the private-equity firm Boathouse Capital made a $15 million growth investment in the firm, then known as Stravos Education. Starvos was renamed Guidewell two years ago.

Founded in 2021 ago by investor and entrepreneur Billy Downing, the company has interests in student tutoring, standardized test prep, and college admissions.

Downing, 46, had been a lending officer for a now defunct community bank, PFF Bank & Trust, for four years before launching ESM Prep in early 2008. ESM (Every Student Matters) offers college counseling, academic mentorship, and standardized test prep to high school students. Even though Downing is CEO, he still works with up to 100 students a year.

“He was a big soccer player in school and valued coaching and mentorship and is a natural coach and mentor himself,” says Natalie Gallagher. president of Guidewell. Downing earned his undergraduate degree in sociology from the University of California at Berkeley in 2002 and was later awarded  a master’s degree in sports management from the University of San Francisco in 2006.

It wasn’t until 2021, with the creation of Stravos, named after Downing’s father, when Downing began his acquisitions spree, first buying Applerouth Education, a firm in test prep and academic tutoring, in Atlanta. Since then, Guidewell has pursued a consolidation strategy by expanding its reach through acquisitions of Summit Educational Group, UES Education, Metro Academic Prep, College MatchPoint, and Reach Cambridge. The latter firm is a UK-based summer camp and academic enrichment provider.

“We try to find best-of-class education businesses in their niches,” explains Gallagher. “mbamission will be the first of potentially more grad school acquisitions. The strategy is finding like-minded people in the education space doing mission-driven good work with students.”

MBAMISSION FOUNDER SHINEWALD SAYS HE HAS LONG FELT A KINSHIP WITH GUIDEWELL FOUNDER DOWNING

Guidewell now claims some 20,000 students in its various programs, with more than 400 “educators and mentors” and more than 900 “trusted educational partners.”

“Jeremy and our CEO and founder have known each other for a decade,” says Gallagher. “They have been colleagues and friends. So this is a long time coming.”

Shinewald says he and Downing “have long felt a kinship in both personal and business values which made a milestone decision far easier than I imagined.”

mbaMission is arguably the world’s largest MBA admissions consulting firm. Two years ago, the firm also launched what is very likely the most comprehensive guide to MBA admissions ever attempted. Dubbed onTrack, it is available to applicants who don’t want to pay the high cost for an admissions consultant. The product features 450 videos, dozens of learning modules and brainstorming exercises, 50 background and goal-specific lessons, 15 essay samples, eight resume examples, and 17 specific school modules.

“When I launched mbaMission in 2004, I never expected that my business would grow beyond me,” wrote Shinewald in an announcement of the sale. “Over the years, our remarkable team of ~50+ consultants and our superb front office consistently made the impossible possible. We completed acquisitions, built an expansive online curriculum/learning platform, created innovative content across multiple social channels and supported thousands upon thousands of applicants, all while maintaining the highest possible standard of service.”
