A self-taught software developer? I’m super impressed. Heck, I am challenged in taking full advantage of idiot-proof software programs. As much as I like what you have accomplished, I also have to say you are aiming very high with HBS on the basis of this profile. Let me explain why. Your 3.3 GPA is below the class average of 3.7 for HBS. What’s more, it is from a non-selective public university which accepts 49% of its applicants (by the way, I think the University of Washington is a superb place to get an education, but in Harvard’s MBA Class of 2020 there was not a single graduate with a U-Dub degree). Your 312 GRE score is well below the 326 class average (which you can …
A self-taught software developer? I’m super impressed. Heck, I am challenged in taking full advantage of idiot-proof software programs. As much as I like what you have accomplished, I also have to say you are aiming very high with HBS on the basis of this profile. Let me explain why. Your 3.3 GPA is below the class average of 3.7 for HBS. What’s more, it is from a non-selective public university which accepts 49% of its applicants (by the way, I think the University of Washington is a superb place to get an education, but in Harvard’s MBA Class of 2020 there was not a single graduate with a U-Dub degree). Your 312 GRE score is well below the 326 class average (which you can expect to be slightly higher for a white male candidate). Because you would matriculate to HBS, if accepted, at the age of 31, you are outside the sweet spot for the school which clearly prefers candidates three to six years out of college. Successful older candidates at HBS tend to be from the military or other highly successful careers such as law. You also seem to have been very focused on your career and not much else based o the fact that you didn’t even list a single EC on your profile. That would suggest to adcoms that you are not well rounded or care about others in any meaningful and tangible way (I’m not saying that is who you are; I am telling you how your profile reads). And finally, while you work for a Fortune 500 aerospace firm, you have only worked in one place and it’s not clear to me–even with your leadership experience–that you have really stood out in that job in a significant way. So, sorry to say, HBS isn’t going to be in the cards. If you really want to pursue an MBA, I would suggest you look at schools in the T-15 to T-30 group where you can still get a superb education and get on that path to a management job in a top tech company.
