After 6 years of active duty Air Force as a life support specialist, I separated to pursue my undergrad. Worked as a full-time government PM before moving into DOD contracting for enterprise IT. Looking to apply to UVA executive MBA. Hopefully, work experience/achievements make up for a lack of academic profile.

Hi, this is JP, Senior Consultant at The MBA Exchange. As someone who shares some of your background, and having advised many EMBA applicants (including military) over the years, I can say with confidence that you have many of the right attributes for a competitive EMBA program. However, equipped with an inspired, informed, and genuine career vision, you can reach even better MBA programs than you expected! This off course assumes you’ll receive the right guidance throughout your application campaign. Generally, I’d say the main risk is of aiming too low, or shooting for a program that doesn’t open the doors that you really need. I’d be happy to tell you more and continue the discussion, just email me at …

Hi Mr. Black Veteran! This is Kate Richardson, Senior Admissions Consultant. Yes, the good news for you is that typically for EMBA programs they emphasize more on the professional / leadership achievements and less on the academic stats. EMBA programs also tend to have pretty high acceptance rates (most are 50% or higher) so I think overall you have good odds. Plus, as an African American and Veteran applicant, you do represent a desirable demographic for top programs like UVA. I would focus on demonstrating your leadership, describing how you will contribute to the rich classroom discussions, and securing recommendation letters that truly advocate for your potential (UVA only requires one, but if you have more than one strong supporter, I think it could help). …

In terms of your work experience level / age, you’re a bit below UVA’s averages (12 years work, 34 years age) but the minimum is 5 years and they may also “count” your active duty time – worth double checking with the program if you haven’t already. Good luck!
Low GPA for a full time adult student. Your GPA will determine your admissions fate.
