After a brief consulting stint post-undergrad, I took a leap and joined a fintech startup to help establish its marketing function. Since that time, I’ve focused on developing our KPIs and reporting, taken ownership of all strategy related to content and SEO, gained regular exposure to the c-suite, and managed several seasonal interns.
Short term, lead a brand or product strategy team for a fintech or other technology/software company. I enjoy the opportunities to make an impact that come with early-stage companies, but I’m also attracted to F500’s with larger reach/scale/visibility. Longer-term – I hope to lead a niche or specialized tech co at the c-level, then pursue teaching.

Hi, this is JP, Senior Consultant at The MBA Exchange and graduate (MBA) of the Harvard Business School. First of all, HBS is very keen on applicants with fewer years of work experience. This trend has even led to the creation of a formal admissions process for college seniors a few years ago! So I wouldn’t worry about the length of your work experience. However, a full year of campaign planning and execution is what it takes to be competitive when targeting HBS and other top schools. So your timing of fall 2021 is right, but the work needs to start now! I’ve written extensively on this topic, and this dynamic is confirmed by the results of my applicants …

I’ve written extensively on this topic, and this dynamic is confirmed by the results of my applicants over the last 10+ years…the early bird gets the worm! I’d be happy to tell you more, and in particular share some info about what you need to do over the next 12-18 months to become a contender at HBS. Just send me an email at jpo@mbaexchange.com. I look forward to hearing from you soon!
Hi Mr. FinTech Marketing! This is Kate Richardson, Senior Admissions Consultant. Sounds like that was a leap worth taking! I’m glad your role at the startup has led to being able to develop processes from scratch and take on important leadership roles. Keep it up! I am also glad you are waiting another year to apply, as I think especially with Harvard, 3 years experience is a bit on the low side. Aside from that, I would work on advancing your leadership within the non-profit – beyond volunteering, can you serve on a committee or junior board? Help plan a major event or coordinate a fundraising campaign? Not sure what is possible right now, but keep an eye out for opportunities. I also think that …

I also think that with your GPA below Harvard’s 3.7 average, it might be worth investing more time in the GMAT. Your score is great, but if you could move the needle more, that would help differentiate you from other well qualified applicants with finance backgrounds. Harvard’s odds are tough, but if you play your cards right over the next year, I think you’ve got a shot (and an even better shot at Kellogg and Booth, by the way). Good luck!
