Mr. Failed Entrepreneur

About Me:

Growing up in a single-parent family, I am a 1st generation college student who has experienced hard livings before when my family lost everything from the 1997 Asia financial crisis. I support the living of the whole family now.

Details:

Undergrad School: HKUST

Undergrad Major: Global Business and Economics (Double Major)

GPA: 3.7

GMAT: 750

Age: 29,  Ethnicity: Asian or Indian

Other Degree/Certification: Visiting Scholar

School Name: University of Oxford

Extracurriculars: Committee member of various business chambers in my country

Work History:

Title: Senior manager, Bancassurance

Industry: Banking & Finance

Length of Employment: 1 yr, 5 mos

Title: TV Sports Presenter and F&B Entrepreneur

Industry: Media

Company: Starting my own business while working at a top local broadcaster

Length of Employment: 5 yrs

Big Life Wins:

I achieved excellent academic results in HKUST and received a full scholarship from the HSBC to study in the University of Oxford. As a failed entrepreneur in F&B for 4 years (and an ex-TV sports presenter – part time job to support my entrepreneurial work financially), I have lost everything more than once but I never say die.

Post MBA Goal:

I subsequently worked in Tech/Fintech/Crypto startups, and currently working at one of the largest banks in Asia, recently granted a leadership award from senior management in the bank for developing a Fintech project. With my experience in startups, I wish to work in the Fintech industry in the States/Asia after my MBA.

Hi Mr. Failed Engineer, Melisa here from Stratus Admissions. Sounds like you’ve had some interesting experiences and probably have experience telling a story with your experience as a TV Sports personality. This will be useful when answering your Stanford essays. While your stats are strong and above Stanford’s average – we do see that international students tend to be a bit higher side. It sounds like your experience at your current bank has afforded you leadership opportunities and experience in Fintech. These experiences will serve you well in contributing across a program and identifying opportunities for Fintech in the future. Stanford looks to develop world changing leaders – so think about how you want to use Fintech to change the world. And what skills do …
