I made the jump to private equity from a consulting firm that historically had very low placement rates. Headhunters told me I likely wouldn’t be able to make the jump because of my lack of experience on due diligence projects, but I worked hard to develop an investors skillset and placed at one of my top choice funds. At my firm I was the lead associate on a sell-side process that led to the most successful return in the history of the firm.
I would like to continue a career in private equity investing with the goal of eventually launching my own fund. I also hope to continue to give back through my community by helping under-privileged youth gain access to the support and mentorship they need as they navigate important life decisions.

Hi Mr. Financial Sponsor, Julie-Anne Heafey with mbaMission here. OK, there is a lot to like about your profile — you have a stellar GPA, I love the initiative and determination to get to your PE goal, and it sounds like you have good community leadership (as I would expect for someone of your background). There are a number of wild cards here that make me cautious, however. These include – the firm you’re at – LMM PE in a regional city can be a bit unpredictable on feeding to Wharton…is there a pipeline at your firm, did partners go there? In my experience, sometimes candidates do well coming from that type of firm there, sometimes they don’t make it …

In my experience, sometimes candidates do well coming from that type of firm there, sometimes they don’t make it all the way there–the specifics can matter. So, I’m crossing fingers, but unsure. Also, the quality of your work experience there and how you’ve made an impact will be very important – that sounds good from the deal you describe, but understanding more about your role on that from your resume and what your recommenders say will be important! While your GPA is excellent, I also worry about your GMAT – a 720 is low for a male in a competitive category at Wharton. Can you retake? Ultimately, admissions are holistic and I like your odds better at Booth and Kellogg….but I’ll cross fingers and hope you can pull it off (are you R2?)!
