I hope to use an MBA to launch a career in international entrepreneurship. Post-MBA, I intend to move down to Brazil to start a company in the logistics/supply chain space. During my MBA, I hope to improve my management and leadership skills to the point where I feel comfortable taking this step. Culturally, I feel that I am already ready.

Hi Mr. International Entrepreneur, this is Julie-Anne Heafey from mbaMission. You seem to have a lot of the ingredients needed for success with your entrepreneurial goals – past success building and exiting, expertise in the sector you’re guarding, and familiarity with the interconnectedness of these markets. I agree that while your GMAT is below average at HBS, your unique background and geographic representation will mitigate this. As you suggest one thing they may in fact wonder is why do you need an MBA to accomplish your plans? Help the adcom see why the degree will enable you to reach some ambitious plans and shape the industry, and why you care about doing so. Good luck!
Hi, it’s Jennifer Jackson from Stratus Admissions. I’m really impressed with all your international experience and languages, particularly as it’s in a less-represented part of the world in Latin America. You’ve got strong entrepreneurial experience already as well as your work at the logistics startup. Your GPA is solid and the GMAT is a bit soft but I don’t think a red flag or deal killer even at HBS since the rest of your profile will really stand out. That said, it wouldn’t hurt to re-take it, if even to show that you made a second attempt. Definitely annoying to have to take online as of now. I think HBS will love that you co-founded a language learning company as well as the accounting company. …

I think HBS will love that you co-founded a language learning company as well as the accounting company. You’ll want to explain what you have learned from those experiences and what might have gone more smoothly if you’d had the benefit of an MBA. This will help answer your Why MBA question that’s so important. If you can craft a compelling narrative and connect the dots from your work in Brazil and Colombia to HBS to your future in Latin America, I think you’ll be competitive there. (And remember, 11% of applicants get admitted so I think you’ll have an above-average shot!)
