I’m an experienced researcher at a globally-renowned sustainability-focused research organization, with a current focus on land management & engaging indigenous communities for development. I have successfully drafted a policy proposal for the national government that has been adopted and led to the creation of a unit tasked to deal with land mismanagement. I also represented my country twice, once in high school and once in university, in the world’s debate championships. Both times, I broke my country’s previous records.
My long-term goal is to develop my country’s, chronically poor, nonprofit infrastructure, to support local nonprofits. Immediately post-MBA, I hope to secure a job at companies such as Givewell, the Bridgespan Group, or the Gates Foundation in positions related to business development, to learn best practices in nonprofit infrastructure.

Hi, it’s Nisha with mbaMission. You have a fascinating background and a strong connection to your community, on top of solid academics and being from a region that’s not heavily represented in MBA application pools. However, I’m not quite clear on why you need an MBA to accomplish the goals that you lay out, so you’ll want to make this clear on your application.
Additionally, even with your NGO experience, the post-MBA target firms you listed are very competitive – to increase the feasibility of your goals and to make a stronger case for why MBA, I’d target joining a for-profit management/strategy consulting firm post-MBA, and then joining one of the firms you indicated in the medium/longer term.
Another area of …
Another area of concern I have is your level of work experience – your competitiveness will depend on the impact you have made in your roles so far and the quality of your recommendations. If you feel that there is significant room for growth in these areas over the next year, then I would wait until then to apply. Hope that helps a bit – best of luck! 🙂
Hello, it’s Lisa Cummings of Stratus. While I love your commitment to community, I suggest that you make a strong connection to why you need an MBA to land your dream job. Adcoms need to know that your goals are tied to the degree and their school. Think about the skills you will need to acquire to reach your dream job as it isn’t obvious that an MBA would be required from what you have listed. Assuming you can put together a strong narrative, your stats should fall in the range of Yale’s. Are you planning to apply in R2 or R3? With 3 years of work you will be on the light side so you will have to …

With 3 years of work you will be on the light side so you will have to laser in on your work success. If you are planning ahead take the next year to think about how you want to position yourself and see if you can take on some leadership roles on the job. Good luck!
