Hi, Mr. Pipeline Engineer to Consulting. Julie-Anne Heafey here with mbaMission. Hmmmm. I think you bring some good things to the table in terms of stats and responsibilities but you’ve picked a challenging target, Harvard, where those are just table stakes. I’ve worked with a lot of engineers, many in energy, over the years, and my advice is to convey your experiences clearly (avoiding jargon), focus on your people skills, and build a story with reflection and vision. Your goal to me needs a bit of work. Your phrasing of “consulting aspirations with a focus on…” seems a little murky and lacking in confidence to me. I’m unclear about whether consulting (to the Big Three) is your big goal since that’s the “aspiration”, or consulting (but “aspiration” means you’re not sure you’ll be successful with that stage?) and THEN one of the Big Three is your plan. I suspect the latter but confidence (without arrogance) can be important to convey. Your essay and your interview, if you get one, will be of absolutely paramount importance, so if you are worried about those, you will want to seek some help. For now, I’ll put you at 20%, which doesn’t feel high probably but is normally about twice the normal rate at HBS. Wishing you good luck in the application process and reach out if you want to discuss further!
