I aim to recruit into MBB Management Consulting. I’ve loved my time in the military, but bureaucracy can limit my personal impact. I want to join the most effective teams in the world solving some of the private sector’s most complex problems and delivering real value to major companies and industries.

Hi Mr. Submariner, Impressive background! The military and navy are some of the best places that train leaders, and business schools welcome that. This is Debbie Choy from mbaMission and GSB alum. I think you have a lot of strengths in your profile – from leading teams, being chosen for a more senior role, very strong GMAT (which can offset your undergrad GPA), and community leadership mentoring teens. Not to mention interesting personal interests like competitive powerlifting. You have slightly more work experience than the typical full-time MBA candidate, but I don’t see it as an issue, especially given your background, and for HBS which appreciates accomplished candidates. As you put your apps together, be sure to weave in your personal and professional stories that can help AdCom better understand what motivates you and why you made certain decisions. For example, how did you choose your focus in the navy? Nuclear submarine is a specialized area. Further, what insights and perspectives can you bring to the HBS classroom discussion based on your experiences? How have your naval experiences shaped you as a leader and team player? I think if you can present these personal and professional stories compellingly, you’d have a strong chance at HBS. If you’d like to discuss your profile in more detail, feel free to schedule a consultation with us. Wishing you the best in your MBA journey!
