Hey Family! Still figuring out which direction I want to go in. Up until 2 months ago, a graduate degree didnāt seem possible. But after taking the GMAT blind and getting a 530, I figure Iāll study and retake, hoping to get in the upper 600-low 700 range and take my best shot at an MBA. Sick of sales, looking for a new direction.

Hi Mr. Undecided Direction, this is Kristen from MBA Prep School. Since the MBA is a path you hadn’t considered until recently, i wanted to share some advice as you begin the process. We’ll put your current GMAT aside for now; assuming you are able to achieve a score in the high 600s/low 700s you will definitely be in the ballpark for programs like Rice Jones, Foster, and USC Marshall. Your GPA is on the lower end of the spectrum, but a strong GMAT may be able to counteract that and you have several other positives you would bring to an MBA class. You are a first gen college grad, you would contribute diversity to a future MBA class, and you have some measurable professional …
You are a first gen college grad, you would contribute diversity to a future MBA class, and you have some measurable professional successes in sales. I would encourage you, however, to move from Mr. Undecided to Mr. Has a Vision before you submit your application. MBA admissions committees want to know you have a plan coming in for how you will utilize your two years and that you understand the skills you need to gain to take your desired career step. These plans don’t need to be set in stone and no one will hold you to them upon admission, but you will need to have a clear story for where you want to go next, why, what your skills gap is, and how each specific MBA program will help you fill it. I would be more than happy to offer you a complimentary consultation so we could talk more about what MBA admissions officers are looking for (I’m a former MIT Sloan adcom) and how to position yourself for success.
Literally everything is a red flag. Low gpa, very low gmat, no idea of what your goals are. You need to fix 2 of those 3 before applying.
