I am an experienced entertainment marketing professional who in addition to getting promoted three times in three years, currently leads and manages the digital and experiential production department. Additionally, I co-founded an artist management company in 2015 where we have a proven track record of successĀ in the music industry. Due to some trauma and mental health challenges in college, I did not live up to my undergraduate potential in terms of GPA which I am aware of – I am hoping my post-grad accomplishments as well as a solid GMAT will compensate for that.

Although I’ve learned an invaluable amount through working at an agency and owning my own, I would like to learn hard skills and challenge myself to grow professionally in a collaborative environment. Post-MBA I would like to create an impact as a woman in entertainment by working in strategy at a major media company or at a entertainment VC firm

Hi Ms. Entertainment Strategist, Kristen from MBA Prep School here. I’m sorry to hear about the challenges you dealt with as an undergrad and how that impacted your performance. I do think your path thus far shows resilience and drive, and your professional successes can help make up some ground. A strong GMAT will help, too; another option is to take some courses through online accredited programs to prove your capabilities (especially in quant classes if you did not take any in undergrad or if your performance was weak). Usually Admissions Committees are looking for no less than a 3.0, but you are close and they might be willing to wiggle a bit if they see lots of other strengths. I like your progress …
I like your progress in marketing as well as the time you have spent building up your start-up. You will want to make sure to highlight “big life wins” in both roles (not just the promotions but the achievements that led to them) to show you are a leader across the board. It doesn’t sound like you have any big name companies to rely on here, so there has to be evidence of impact within a smaller organization. Your community dedication is a big bonus and differentiator for you, and shows that your career goal merges your person passion for women’s issues with your professional skillset. I think the programs you are targeting are a good match for you, both in terms of how they align with your career goals and how competitive you are for them. Make sure you lay out a plan for how to achieve these goals and what skills you still need. If you bring your A game to the other parts of the application and are open about what impacted your academics in college, you definitely have a shot. We would be happy to help you put together a strong story to help win over the Admissions Committee!
Hard to assess odds without a GMAT. But you are right. Even though it sounds like your undergraduate grades are not a true indication of your academic ability, you need to get a really solid GMAT score.
