After graduating from a top-tier undergrad school with less than average GPA, it was hard to get a good job. But I slowly made my way through the jobs I could get, worked hard and now my knowledge and experience gets me the best opportunities in the tech industry as a freelancer.
Slowly get more contracts and help more people like me get a shot at good opportunities despite low GPA.

Hi Ms. Freelancer, This is Debbie Choy, Senior Consultant at mbaMission. I like that you’re a woman in tech, and who cares about helping others – congrats on your 3rd prize in N/Core-Ideathon. That said, business school is a big investment, and the Admissions Committee (AdCom) is looking to understand how an MBA will help you achieve your future career goals. I’m not sure if continuing to do what you’re doing now, albeit more of it, is enough to justify the huge time and cost investments of getting an MBA. I recommend looking at some job postings of roles you ideally want to get post-MBA. What are the job titles? What companies do you admire and want to work for? Look for “MBA Preferred” or “MBA …

I recommend looking at some job postings of roles you ideally want to get post-MBA. What are the job titles? What companies do you admire and want to work for? Look for “MBA Preferred” or “MBA Required” in these job postings. If these are the jobs you truly want, then you can weave them into your b-school application to form a more compelling narrative. Best wishes with your MBA journey.
Ms. Freelancer – Thanks for posting your profile. Susan Cera, Director of MBA Admissions at Stratus here. I spent 5+ years reviewing applications from Indian candidates during my time with adcom at Duke Fuqua. I was always impressed by the BITS alumni who seemed to be more well-rounded.
I encourage you to do a bit more introspection about why you want to get an MBA. It seems that your post-MBA goal could be achieved by simply continuing to do your contract work. What will an MBA add for you? Are you looking to do something different in your career. What will an MBA add for you? Are you looking to do something different in your career. Once you have a solid response to this question, I think you could be a very compelling candidate for HEC Paris. Your GMAT is right at their average. Though your undergrad performance is ‘soft’ perhaps there is a reason? Were you actively engaged in the university community? HEC has a significantly lower percentage of women than other top MBA programs so perhaps they will be more forgiving.
Wishing you all the best on your MBA application journey!
I think that your high GMAT score, your work experience and a personal statement that you show devotion can outweigh the low GPA and give you good chances.
