Your MD degree from Johns Hopkins buys you a lot of credibility. Truth is, not that many docs apply to full-time MBA programs. They tend to enroll in EMBAs and even the better online MBA options. So you will immediately stand out in the applicant pool at MIT Sloan. Since you only list Sloan, I am assuming that you really want to be in Boston. Given the small size of the incoming class at Sloan (416), however, the acceptance rate is really low: 11.5% for the latest incoming class. That’s even slightly lower than the 12% at Harvard Business School which enrolls a class that is more than double Sloan’s at around 930. Your GRE score of 307 is also below the mid-80% range published …

At the end of the day, I think your MD i and your goals on using the MBA will make a big difference at Sloan.
Hi Ms. Physician! Krista Nannery from mbaMission here. Kinda loving this combination — you’re a woman, you’re (presumably) from Ghana, and you’re an MD from Johns Hopkins! Candidates like you don’t come along that often so I think b-schools are going to be excited to see your application. BUT…the GRE score…you’re lower than where I’d like you to be. Because you’re so unique, it’s still possible that you’ll be successful but I’d love to see you give yourself the best possible chance at this crazy process. Hire a private tutor focused on you and your score and do some drills to get yourself to 320 if possible. You have the luxury of time between now and R1 2020. (I’m not clear if you’ve already applied …

(I’m not clear if you’ve already applied to Sloan or not.) I’d also LOVE to see you consider Wharton HCM. Please do some research into that program and talk to students currently in the program to get their tips for applying. Fuqua and Ross also have great healthcare options. GOOD LUCK!!
Hello Ms. Physician, Lisa Cummings of Stratus Admissions, formerly a Sloan adcomm. What an interesting profile, I know how hard it is to transition to US medical schools from elsewhere and Hopkins certainly is a top school. So congrats. While your profile will catch the eye of the committee so will your GRE score. I agree with Krista, work on that if you can. Have you tried the GMAT? If you haven’t, you may want to take a practice test cold just to see if you like that format better – some applications prefer one test over the other. In terms of experience, are you counting your residency as work experience? Most school do because, let’s face it, residency IS …

Most school do because, let’s face it, residency IS work. Over my time at Sloan we saw increasing numbers of doctors and med students in the applicant pool – some wanted to transition out of medicine, and some, like you, wanted to go into hospital administration or other roles within their specialties. Think more specifically on why you need an MBA to reach your goals, what skills do you need from the degree? You will want to focus on why you need an MBA versus a masters in hospital administration for example. Good luck!
You have a solid profile though one thing I think the adcoms are going to need to know is why after MD/MPH do you need an MBA and why Sloan specifically? Are you considering Wharton/Kellogg/Duke? Also, the GRE is slightly below what Sloan would need but given your strong MD/MPH background, I am less worried about that. Good luck!
