“Don’t underestimate the impact your story has on your application,” says Mark O’Brien, MBA recruitment manager at Oxford’s Saïd Business School. “Areas like GPA and GMAT are very important, but GPA, for example, you can’t change. So you can’t dwell on your GPA. You can’t change that so you need to emphasize your professional story: what you’ve done and what you bring to the classroom is slightly different. Sometimes there is a tendency to fill out your application thinking what does the admissions committee wants to hear. That kind of application is very obvious, very quickly. We are interested in what you are bringing that is different. When you stand up in the classroom and give your opinion, we want to know how that will enlighten the rest of the classroom.”
