3 Characteristics Tepper Looks For In Applicants

Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business ranked number 17 in P&Q’s Top Business Schools rankings this year.

The B-school’s Class of 2022 is made up of consultants, neuroscientists, and engineers – just to name a few. With a close-knit culture, Tepper seeks out students who can not only fit well into their community, but contribute to it as well.

Catherine Tuttle, a consultant at Fortuna Admissions and former Associate Director at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, recently discussed the three key characteristics that Tepper admissions looks for in applicants.

IMPACT WITHIN COMMUNITY

Tepper admissions officers specifically seek out applicants who can demonstrate evidence of impact.

“Impact on the bottom line, but also impact within your community,” Tuttle writes. “Tepper is guided by a mission to transform the world. They are looking for students who define community in the broadest sense of the word and have a desire to effect positive change.”

POTENTIAL FOR GROWTH

While MBA admissions officers like to see leaders, they also like to see applicants who can admit to their short fallings and demonstrate self-awareness in terms of growth.

“Your ability to learn from mistakes and willingness to seek candid feedback from others demonstrates a desire to grow personally and professionally,” Tuttle writes. “The MBA experience is transformative in both of these areas – expect to push yourself and grow beyond what you imagined was possible.”

INCLUSIVITY

Tepper stands by its tight-knit community. With a class size of 200, the B-school seeks out individuals who can add diversity in thought and identity to its unique cohort of students.

“As such, the admissions team is looking for evidence of self-reflection and your ability to appreciate differences as a profound asset to a culture of innovation,” Tuttle writes.
