It’s strange how the world can change completely in just a few years. Not long ago, few professionals had artificial intelligence, global supply chain disruptions, or climate change on their radar. Today, these forces shape strategy at every level – and throw old certainties out the window.

To lead effectively in a volatile and interconnected global economy, you need more than an undergraduate degree – you need deeper insights, broader skills, and a vision for impact.

In today’s complex world, stepping up means building on your foundation with interdisciplinary, future-ready expertise that empowers you to lead with confidence on the global stage.

“For professionals looking to stay relevant and lead with impact, a postgraduate education remains a powerful investment,” explains Professor Jun Yang, Dean of Nanyang Business School (NBS). “Postgraduate degrees offer depth and structured learning beyond what short-term certifications provide.”

A Business School Built For The Future

What used to be two separate domains – business and technology – are now deeply intertwined, requiring future leaders to speak both “languages” with ease. As Prof. Yang puts it, “Leaders who can connect the dots across business and tech will be the ones driving real impact.”

This perspective shapes NBS’s interdisciplinary approach, which is deeply rooted in its identity as part of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. “Our unique position within a leading technological university allows us to deliver a business education that blends core fundamentals with innovation and digital fluency,” explains Prof. Yang.

This integration of disciplines drew Janet Uy, a cloud solution architect at Microsoft, to the Nanyang Executive MBA (EMBA), a 13-month part-time program for experienced executives.

“The evolution of technology is just so fast – what I know, I learned on the fly,” Janet tells us. “I needed to slow down; to sharpen my leadership and management skills, to validate what I’ve been learning and practising.”

After nearly two decades in tech, Janet wanted to develop her business expertise, with the hopes of qualifying for more strategic, leadership-oriented roles in the future. NBS’s flexible, innovation-focused learning environment was exactly what she needed.

“I was attracted to how NBS brings everything together: tech, innovation, entrepreneurship, business,” Janet explains. “They’re grounded in technology and layering it with business in a multidisciplinary, modular format.”

The EMBA helped her reframe decision-making and assess organisational impact from multiple angles, especially during overseas classes at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, and the University of California, Berkeley, in the US.

“I was more exposed to Western corporate management styles; Tsinghua was an eye-opener, offering insights to Chinese culture, history, and way of thinking,” Janet explains. “UC Berkeley balanced it out, with lessons from professors with a rich experience in Silicon Valley innovation. They are two distinct cultures – how do you harmonise them in the real world?”

Fluent In Strategy, Technology, And People

The contrast between Chinese and American approaches underscores the importance of Cultural Intelligence (CQ) as an enabler of positive business outcomes. In today’s global business environment, the ability to navigate different ways of thinking and working is just as vital as strategic and technical skills for effective leadership.

“At NBS, CQ isn’t an add-on – it’s integrated into the classroom experience,” explains Prof. Yang. “Our classrooms are intentionally diverse, creating daily opportunities to collaborate across cultures and industries. This builds cross-cultural understanding and strengthens students’ ability to lead globally.”

For Ong Juan Xun, a Master of Science in Financial Engineering (MFE) graduate, the program’s diversity was pivotal.

“Working together with diverse classmates taught me how to navigate cultural nuances, communicate clearly, and manage team dynamics,” he says. “It is particularly helpful in my current job environment as I also have colleagues from diverse backgrounds.”

This also prepared Juan Xun for the overseas segment at Carnegie Mellon University – “a fun and eye-opening journey that deepened my learning.”

The practical lessons he learned – from machine learning to create trading strategies, to options valuation using programming – would prove very useful in his career. “The process of building financial models from scratch using real data, validating them, and presenting findings honed both my technical and communication skills,” he explains.

Technical And Transformational Growth

Janet and Juan Xun have joined other NBS postgraduate alumni in leading with impact in their respective careers.

The Nanyang MFE helped to sharpen Juan Xun’s ability to analyse problems systematically and make confident, data-driven decisions – essential skills in his present role as an Analyst in FX Options Trading at Nomura Singapore Limited.

“I’ve learned to break down complex issues into modelable components, assess assumptions critically, and apply the right tools,” he says.

Janet, for her part, appreciates Nanyang EMBA as a foundation for high-level decision-making. The program’s multidisciplinary curriculum, she says, “gave me a bag of tools to make decisions better.” The Nanyang EMBA has empowered Janet to take on roles with greater organisational visibility and influence.

Janet and Juan Xun’s respective postgraduate experiences demonstrate development that transcends mere technical competence: “At Nanyang Business School, personal and leadership development is an integral part of the experience, offering a level of transformation that short programs cannot match,” adds Prof. Yang.

Positioned For Real-World Impact

These stories are typical of a school – and a nation – that consistently punches above its weight. Backed by strong global rankings, a future-ready curriculum, and Singapore’s strategic location, NBS creates ripple effects far beyond the classroom.

“Our programs are designed for real-world impact, and our position in Singapore gives our students access to fast-growing economies and a wealth of global business activity,” says Prof. Yang. “There are rich opportunities for internships, real-world projects, and networking with MNCs and startups alike, in one of the world’s most vibrant regions.”

NBS’s impact is also reflected in global benchmarks. The latest Financial Times Global MBA Ranking placed the Nanyang MBA as #1 in Singapore and #22 worldwide – demonstrating NBS’s commitment to excellence, achieved at a level unusual for such a young university.

“The ranking affirms the value of an NBS education and the strong return on investment we offer,” says Prof. Yang. “Three years after graduation, our MBA alumni see their salaries grow by 1.5 times. We also rank highly for career progression.”

Your Next Step Starts Here

Today’s world demands more than technical expertise or short-term credentials. It calls for change-makers who can think strategically, lead across cultures, and navigate complexity with confidence.
