I was born in a poor farming village in the 3rd world. My father moved my family to America after my older brother passed away from unsafe living conditions. My parents instilled education as a top priority in their children. Now, my family – all US citizens – are giving back, as 2 siblings are doctors, 3 are engineers, and I aim to improve healthcare.

Hi, Mr. Giving Back, wow, what a story, and congrats on your interview invitations. I put your odds at about 70% now that you’ve gotten an interview invitation, as in my experience, NYU really only interviews candidates that they are quite serious about and the odds tend to be better than the usual 50/50 for an invitee at other programs. In your interview, remember to articulate why MBA/why Stern/why now, and demonstrate thoughtfulness and emotional intelligence to the extent you can. Wishing you the best of luck! Warmly, Julie-Anne Heafey, mbaMission

Mr. Giving Back – Thanks for posting your profile! Congrats on the interview invitations at Stern and Anderson. Now that you have made it to the interview stage, you have a nod from adcom that they want you in their class. Your challenge will be to present yourself well as you connect your experiences to date through each program to your short and long term goals. You can put your softer undergrad performance behind you since your strong GMAT confirms that you have the ability to succeed in the classroom. Make sure you can clearly articulate why MBA? why Now? And why Stern? You will want to be specific in calling out courses you want to take, clubs and activities you will get involved it, why the culture is right for you and what contribution you will make both in the classroom and through outside initiatives. Do this and I’m confident you will be in a classroom come fall. Reach out if you are interested in support as you prep for your interviews!
