Having grown up with some health issues, I’ve always been passionate about healthcare. I’ve worked at a large pharmaceutical wholesaler for six years, first in their Finance rotational program, and then roles in Tokyo to support M&A integration. I currently work in strategic pricing, managing deal models for both new and existing customers.

I was hand-selected and played a key role in integrating a $300M+ business as the finance lead in a country where my organization had no prior footprint, winning a company award in the process. In my current role, I have been instrumental in reversing a trend of declining market share for the business unit that I support.
My goal is to increase healthcare accessibility (i.e. think telehealth, at home, etc). I hope to gain a stronger knowledge of industry strategy, as well as further develop leadership and communication skills that are necessary to motivate and maintain a large team. In the short term, I am looking to go into healthcare consulting.

Hi Mr. Healthcare Salaryman, this is Julie-Anne Heafey from mbaMission. I love your clear passion for healthcare and I think your international work experience will help to differentiate you from other applicants, particularly given the scope of your assignment and the leadership it required. Your GMAT is a touch below the average at Columbia, and sometimes they can be rather strict in looking at scores, but if you apply early in the process and demonstrate that they’re your first choice, they should strongly consider you. Make sure to network there! Best of luck!
Hello Mr. Healthcare Salaryman, it’s Lisa Cummings of Stratus Admissions. Your stats place you right about average for Columbia (a tad below for GMAT); you show 3 years of work experience but mention 6 in your summary. While I am sorry to hear that you have had some health issues, I like to see that you have an underlying passion driving your career and goals. Your career success to date is a plus and I also see nice community involvement in college, what are you doing now on the Employee Resource Group? Any community activity outside of the workplace? What I really want to know more about is Why MBA. I see you mention a need …
I see you mention a need for better leadership and communication skills as well as knowledge of industry strategy. What have you done/are you doing currently to build out those skills? It sounds like you had a solid leadership role in the integration project – what gaps do you think you have? Have you assumed any other leadership roles on your work projects? You will want to get very specific to show the adcomms why you need an MBA to gain those skills and can’t just pick them up in your current job or with a few classes. Additionally you will need to flesh out what roles /functions in health care consulting you will target. Overall your numbers and solid track record should make you a good fit for Columbia and your other choices are solid too. Have you considered Carnegie Mellon? They have a great connection to health care as well. Given the current environment and the uptick in the practice of telemedicine, you could end up in high demand post degree. Stay safe and good luck!
