I am a former division one athlete from the Midwest who packed up after college and headed to southern California (always my dream). Spent first two years of my career in big 4 accounting and left to sell-side equity research shortly after promotion to senior. Overcoming mental health difficulties which significantly impacted my year masters program. Putting my career back on track passing my CPA and levels 1/2 of CFA. Being promoted ahead of schedule and running one line of our research business with complete autonomy over research process, publication, and client outreach.
Investment banking. Public accounting was always a means to an end for me, the job got me from the Midwest to southern California and I never looked at is more than a “starter job”. Transitioned to equity research as hedge funds have always been of interest to me, but want to pivot to IB, then lateral to corporate finance, the end goal of CFO.

Hi Mr IB Hopefully, This is Debbie Choy, GSB alum and Senior Consultant at mbaMission. I understand your passion for California, having gone to school there myself! I think you have a lot of strengths in your profile – being a student athlete, a strong work trajectory (promotion, transition to equity research), and solid academic track record (GPA, GMAT, CPA, CFA). Your profile would be very competitive at UCLA and USC. For both schools, it’s important to explain why you wish to transition into IB, and why you’re passionate about your long-term goal of becoming a CFO. I think your career path makes a lot of sense, and I have seen past clients with similar experiences do well at these schools. I think if you can …

Mr. IB Hopefully – Thanks for posting your profile. Susan Cera here from Stratus.
There is a lot to like about your profile. Strong stats for your target schools and commitment to the region. Congrats on getting your CPA and getting through the first two levels of the CFA curriculum. These designations demonstrate your ability to suceed in academics.
This year UCLA doesn’t give you a lot of words to tell your story so you’ll have to get to the point on your goals and why Anderson (think location, capstone project, culture) then how this year’s events have influenced the direction you want to take. I suspect that the opportunity to share all that you have learned as an athlete will have to wait until an interview. …

USC is an up and coming program which gets a bit tricky for some applicants because you aren’t allowed to submit recommendations. You should be well-positioned for Marshall as well.
Reach out for a profile evaluation if you want additional insights. Wishing you all the best on your application journey!
I would say you have a fairly strong chance of getting into one of those schools, but I wouldn’t count on getting into both programs. Good luck!
